Fourth Doctor and Sarah
The outfit of the figure is made up of many different materials and I want to be able Jane
to show the differences in these materials through texture or surface finish. I
Mini of the Week – The
imagined that the softer areas of the bodysuit would be of a high-tech cellular
Fourth Doctor and Sarah
fabric. The challenge here was going to be how to create such a pattern using paint.

The fabric areas have been sprayed in with a couple of coats of Tamiya XF-69 Nato
Black. I really like the Tamiya flat colours as they have an extremely matt finish
especially when applied with an airbrush.

I have added some XF-22 RLM Grey to the XF-69 and started to spray in some
highlights along the prominent areas and the tops of folds in the fabric, places where
the light would naturally fall.

Adding more RLM Grey to the mix I continue to highlight the fabric areas.

Even though I want this to be a very dark fabric I am deliberately over-highlighting

some of the areas with pure RLM Grey as the next stage will darken the overall
colour.

The final highlights have been airbrushed over the figure and the fabric areas have
been given a couple of coats of Testors Dullcote to protect the paintwork.

Using some low-tack masking tape I cover an area of the model. This will act as a
template for the next stage.

As I want these areas to have a warp-knitted cellular look I would need to find a
similar scaled down version. Luckily I found a fabric that had been used as the
covering for some old stereo speakers.

Carefully pulling away the masking tape template from the figure I pressed it onto
the fabric. Now I could cut out the fabric in the same shape and apply it to the
figure.

Once the fabric had been cut to size I sprayed the reverse very lightly with
Spraymount adhesive. I used this very, very sparingly as I don’t want the glue to
transfer onto the paintwork. I carefully pressed the tacky fabric into place.

I then sprayed through the mesh with some thin layers of XF-69 Nato Black, building
up the tones in the recesses and folds. Once the paint was dry I carefully removed
the mesh-fabric mask.

Because the fabric mask was tacky it would conform to the contours of the figure
and the pattern could be sprayed into those hard-to-reach areas. More successful
than just holding the fabric in front of the figure and spraying through.

The arm has received a similar treatment.

Taking each fabric area in turn I have made tape-templates and cut separate mesh
masks for each. This was very time consuming but worth the effort I think.

Once all the areas had been patterned I added some highlights to the most
prominent areas by hand using XF-22 RLM Grey with a tiny bit of VMC-883 Silvergrey
mixed in to lighten it. Adding the small highlights give a hint of three dimensionality
to the texture of the fabric.

The armour next…
