Awards and Recognition of SHS Learners

Introduction

“Recognizing and rewarding the achievements of

students is not a new idea for decades, elementary
teachers have handed out gold stars, high schools have
placed students on honor rolls, and universities have
published dean’s lists to honor the accomplishment of
students. Various educational curricula have typically
involved in a component of competition, recognition and
article for the student has highly talented and as a
motivated student in their schools”. (Shepard, Samuel
Joseph. 2010)

Nowadays, most schools and their teachers

recognize their student that has potential to the
different subjects or areas as supplemented by some
governmental orders and memoranda.

This study seeks to examine the impact of awards

and recognition to the SHS students. This study will
explore the issue by asking current SHS learners who
are recognized in both academics and extra-curricular
activities as well as those who are not. In addition,
this study also seeks to determine things that the
students who received awards and recognition may impact
by the way in which these individuals attribute their
success.

The study aims to know the impact of awards and

recognition to the SHS learners and its possible effect
in their performance. This study will be very
significant in determining the impact of awards to the
students whether awards and recognitions help to
improve their learning and serving as motivation to be
excellent in schools.

Statement of the problem

1. How may the profile of the respondents be described

in terms of;

1.1. Age;
1.2. Gender;
1.3. Year level;
1.4. Family income;

2. How may the impact of awards and recognition to the

SHS learners be described in terms of;

2.1. Prestige;

2.2. Family’s expectations;

2.3. Teachers’ expectations;

2.4. Credentials;

3. How do awards and recognition affect the lives and

behavior of students or individual?

Conceptual Framework

The study entitled Awards and Recognition of SHS learners

seeks to determine the impact of awards and recognition to the

SHS learners and its effect to their performance and behavior.

The researcher’s way to qualify and quantify the impact of

awards and recognition to the SHS learners (senior high school

students) is by means of gathering data from the responses of

respondents through interviews, observation, and set of

questions to be answered by them in a research questionnaire and

relating them to existing related literatures with different

set-up. The process consists of transcribing responses of the

respondents from the questionnaires. Statistical treatment of

data through different tools such as computation of weighted

mean, percentage, frequency count, rank will also be utilized.

These research will also consist of revalidation to confirm the

reliability of respondents’ responses.

The output consists of the expected outcome of the study

which is explaining the effect of/and impact of awards and

recognition to the SHS learners.

Significance of the study

The purpose of this study is to better understand the

impact of awards and recognition to the SHS learners. This study

will examine multiple aspects to both students who have been

receiving awards and to those students who have not yet been

recognized. First, through the use of open-ended questions and

quantitative methodology, it will explore participants’

perceptions on awards and recognition. Second, it will examine

how attributions of success contribute to the impact of awards

and recognition.

This Study may directly and indirectly provide

significance to the following students and group of people.

Senior High School Students: From this study the Senior high

school learners will have an idea on how awards and recognition

can affect their lives, and this study will motivate SHS

learners to excel in different areas or subjects to attribute

their success.

Parents: In this study, parents will able to understand why

their children need to do

Teachers/Faculty: From this study, they will able to enhance

those recognizing the achievements of their students that has

potential in different areas and for those Student who did not

recognize as an awardees Teachers will able to discuss to their

students that awards and recognition has a positive outcome for

their future.
The Future Researcher: This will help to contribute some

information to the upcoming researchers in their future studies

and serve as their reference. This will guide them in conducting

research study similar to the present.

Future Senior High School Students: This study will provide an

overview to the future SHS learners on the impact of awards and

recognition.

Scope and Limitation

This study focused on the Impact of awards and recognition

to the SHS learners.

The study was conducted in the School of Cesar E. Vergara

Memorial Integrated Senior High School, Cabanatuan city using

the questionnaire as the main tool in gathering data. The

Researcher will conduct between in the month of January to

February 2018.

Definition of terms

Attribute – To think of something as caused by a particular

circumstance. (Dictionary)
Prestige – It refers honor, awe or High opinion by derived from

a high- ranking, influential, or successful person. (Dictionary)

SHS learners – As used in the study, it refers to the

Senior High School Students.

Transcribe – To write out an exact copy of something

(Dictionary)

Statistical Treatment of data

The responses gathered from the questionnaires were tallied

and analyzed using frequency count, percentages and weighted

scores ranking.

The formula will be used for percentage will be as follows:

P=f/n x 100 %

Where:

P= percentage

F= frequency

N= total number of respondents

Percentage will be computed by getting the quotient of frequency

of responses (F) over the total number of research participants

(N) then multiplied to one hundred (100)

Local Literature

According to research Recognizing and rewarding

the achievements of students is not a new idea for

honor the accomplishment of students. For highly

talented and motivated individuals, opportunities to

pursue skills and interest outside of the formal

educational curriculum have typically involved in a

component of competition as well, such as science fairs

and essay contest. This award recognizes students under

the age of 18 who have completed a significant piece of

work that has the potential to make a positive

contribution to society in one of the following areas:

science, technology, mathematics, music, literature,

philosophy, or any other graduate-level work. (Davidson
