Datuk Seri Hasmiza Othman - cosmetics millionaire

 Datuk Seri Hasmiza Othman, popularly known as Dr Vida, is one of the most successful businesswomen in
Malaysia. She is known for establishing her own empire of cosmetics and health business, Vida Beauty, and its
famous product, Qu Puteh.

Born in Machang, Kelantan, the flamboyant entrepreneur has endured a lot of hardships since childhood.
From losing her father at the tender age of eight to mourning for her two children who died in a tragic fire
incident in August 2013 and going through her third divorce last April - Dato Seri Vida has endured many
challenges to become who she is today.

The circumstances of losing her father led Vida to learn how to be independent and she found early in her life that
she could support herself by running her own business. Even when she was still in school, she learned to make
her own pocket money by selling packed meals to her friends. This continued all the way until she went to
university, where she not only sold products to her peers and teachers, but also took up part-time jobs to support
herself.

When she graduated from Universiti Sains Malaysia with a degree in education, Vida got herself a steady stream
of monthly income as a teacher. It was then that she took the opportunity to learn about the beauty and grooming
field and ventured into the business.

She went through multiple high and low points after that, including taking on a RM100,000 loan to open up a salon.
It was only after 12 years into her teaching career that she decided to switch jobs and started working at the
National Vocational Training Council.

Eventually, Vida Beauty was incepted and Vida even received a RM1 million grant from the government to develop
the business. However, the business was on the verge of closing down when she invested half the capital into
advertising that didn't seem to work until she promoted her products on RTM Kelantan FM radio station.

That turned her business around. Since then, she has been more cautious about how she markets her products,
often using herself as the brand ambassador.

Despite the various setbacks and challenges along this journey, Vida has emerged as one of the most
notable entrepreneurs in the country who has accumulated much wealth that enables her to proudly say
that she is the sponsor of some of the most-watched television shows in Malaysia, owns a RM22 million
home in Ipoh and luxury cars such as Lamborgini Aventador and Bugatti, among others.
6. Datuk Dr Maznah Hamid - Iron Lady

 Datuk Dr Maznah Hamid went through a difficult childhood after her parents divorced when she was only five. She
was brought up by her grandparents and grew up dreaming to be an entrepreneur, much to her
grandfather's disapproval who said that entrepreneurs are drop-outs who will eventually end up selling
fish and vegetables in the market.

She continued her education in linguistics and later became a tutor and translator for several embassies and
multinational companies.

However, she did not forget her childhood ambition and was determined to set up her own business. After going to
from one bank another and seeing her loan applications rejected one by one, she decided to take out all of her
RM5,000 savings to start her own company in a field dominated by men.

Dubbed as 'Iron Lady', Maznah became the first ever woman in Malaysia to lead a security company known as
Securiforce.

When she first founded Securiforce, she had little clue how to run a business but through hard work and
persistence, she managed to turn it into a multimillion company with a 6,000-people strong workforce and more
than 65 branches today.

During the initial stages of her business, Maznah had to face many different challenges such as lack of
manpower, which led her to guarding the premises on her own while her husband did the patrolling. At one
point of time, she even had to sell away her house and stayed in an illegal house to fund the business.

With her never-say-die attitude, Maznah perseverance not only ensured that Securiforce flourished under her
wings but it also allowed her to venture into other activities such as becoming a property developer and a
renowned motivational speaker.
P. RAMLEE
P. Ramlee, or Tengku Zakaria was born on 22 March 1929 to Tengku Nyak Puteh Bin Tengku Karim (1902 - 1955) and Che Mah Hussein
(1904 - 1967). His father, Tengku Nyak Puteh, travelled from Lhokseumawe in Aceh, Indonesia) to settle in Penang; where his mother is from.
Ramlee received his education from the Sekolah Melayu Kampung Jawa (Kampung Jawa Malay School), Francis Light English School and
then to Penang Free School; in all he was registered as “Ramlee” in school. Reportedly a reluctant student, Ramlee was nevertheless talented
in music and football. His studies at the Penang Free School was interrupted by the Japanese occupationfrom 1942 to 1945, during which he
enrolled in the Japanese navy school. He also learnt the basics of music and to sing Japanese songs during this period. When the war ended,
he took music lessons that enabled him to read musical notations

His first screen appearance was in Chinta, a B. S. Rajhans-directed film produced by Malay Film Productions in 1948.[2] Between 1948 and 1955, he
has starred in a total of 27 films. He eventually ventured into film directing under the mentoring of Madras-born director L. Krishnan.

Death[edit]
On 29 May 1973, P. Ramlee died at the age of 44 years old from a heart attack and was buried at Jalan Ampang Muslim Cemetery, in Kuala Lumpur.
A 90-minute documentary on his life released by History Channel Asia[3] on October 2010 further revealed that his untimely death becoming a shock to
the nation and a sense of collective guilt following it began to spread nationwide. This was because, prior to his death, he had been discredited and
rejected by the entertainment industry and the public at large who felt that he was a "has-been" and that his songs and films were no longer relevant
or marketable. The documentary also revealed that, despite his previous success in the entertainment industry, P. Ramlee had died penniless, having
given away the last of his money to a visitor to his house who he felt needed the money more than him.[3]

n 1986, 13 years after his death, in honour of his contributions to the Malaysian entertainment industry, the P. Ramlee Memorial or Pustaka
Peringatan P. Ramleewas built in his home in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur. In 1982, the street Jalan Parry, in the center of Kuala Lumpur, was renamed
Jalan P. Ramlee in his honour. In 1990, he was posthumously awarded the Malaysian honorific title Tan Sri, and then in 2009, the honorific title of
"Datuk Amar" by Sarawak State Government. Then Chief Minister of Sarawak, Abdul Taib Mahmud, an avid fan of P. Ramlee, presented the award to
his adopted daughter, Dian P. Ramlee, in a ceremony honouring veteran artists in Kuching.[4]
The P. Ramlee House is a museum situated along Jalan P. Ramlee (formerly Caunter Hall road) in Penang, Malaysia. The building is a restored
wooden house that was originally built in 1926 by his father and uncle. The house had previously undergone multiple repairs before being taken over
by the National Archives as an extension of its P. Ramlee Memorial project in Kuala Lumpur. Items on display at the house include personal
memorabilia related to his life in Penang and items belonging to his family.
On March 22, 2017; his 88th birthday, Google honored P. Ramlee with a Doodle on the Malaysian Google homepage.[5][6]

Childhood and family (1979–1995)[edit]

Siti was born on 11 January 1979 in Berek Polis (police barrack) Kampung Awah in Temerloh, Pahang where she was the fifth child in a family of

Coming from a poor family,[31][34] at the age of nine,[35] Siti had to wake up at 4:00am to help her mother make and sell various homemade kuih in her
neighbourhood, where sometimes, she also had to carry a makeshift table down three flights of stairs to the main road to set up a small stall.[36] She
commented that all the hardships have not only helped her to be more frugal when spending, but also to be more confident when communicating with
the public.[35] She also jokingly said that the whole experience has helped to improve her vocal skills as she has to shout to call for customers.[37] Apart
from participating in singing competitions, she also used to follow her uncle, Abdul Rahim Bachik to invitational shows like wedding ceremonies and
dinner parties which have helped to expose her to performing live.[38]

In December 1999, Siti received one of her first international winnings from an international singing competition when she took part in 'Shanghai Asia

attention with her vocal prowess,[17] that finally led her to be awarded with the Best Female Vocal Performance with the same single even though the
single was judged by cassette tape/compact disc sent by her recording company to the organiser and not through live performance.[17] For the next few
years, Siti took part in 'Voice of Asia 2002' which was held in Kazakhstan, where she performed one of her singles from her third album, Purnama
Merindu and managed to grab the Grand Prix Champion title, the ultimate prize.[18][19]
In December 2003, she was invited to perform at 2003 Japan and ASEAN Pop Stars Dream Concert 2003 (J-ASEAN Pops 2003), held in Yokohama,
Japan, alongside top Japan and ASEAN artists, including THE BOOM, You Hitoto, INSPi, Leonard Eto, Yuri Chika, Hiroshi Takano and Hideki

(Laos), Lay Phyu & Iron Cross (Myanmar), Jolina Magdangal(Philippines), Tanya Chua (Singapore), Briohny (Thailand) and Lam Truong
(Vietnam).[50] For the concert, a special song was composed by a Japanese composer, Kazufumi Miyazawa with lyrics by a Singaporean lyricist, Dick
Lee entitled, Treasure the World. The same song was also sung by each singer from each participating country in their native languages, where Siti's
version which was in Malay, entitled Dunia Milik Kita was also performed for the first time during the event.[50]
Siti was the first non-Chinese artiste to be invited to perform at the 15th Golden Melody Awards, Taiwan in 2004. Apart from performing solo with 征
服 (Conquer) cover of Na Ying's single,[51] she also sang a duet with Leehom Wang in a song called 月亮代表我的心 (The Moon Represents My Heart)

In 2004 also her company Siti Nurhaliza Production (M) Sdn. Bhd. (SNP) produced television programs. With the first musical program Muzikal
Aidiladha (Musical of Eid Al-Adha) in conjunction with the Eid Al-Adha.[53] After that, the company came up with the Siti Nurhaliza 3D (Siti Nurhaliza
Dari Dalam Diri), a reality television series that exclusively reveal the private life of Siti Nurhaliza with 13 episodes and airing on RTM, a Malaysian
public broadcasting network.[53][54] In same year also SNP produced Sukan dan Selebriti (Sports and Celebrities) programs involving the participation of
popular artists and sports personalities in various fields with 26 episodes.[53]
In 2005, she was dubbed as The Voice of Asia, when Alicia Keys first introduced her with the title during the MTV Asia Aid in 2005 held in Bangkok,
Thailand due to her powerful vocal, and her outstanding achievements locally and internationally.[55] In the same year, Siti held a successful solo
concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London in April 2005, although the majority of the audience were Malaysians living in the United Kingdom, together
with the local citizens. British press compared her performance to those by Celine Dion and cited her as Asia's Celine Dion for her powerful vocal and
outstanding performances.[56][57][58] During the concert, she was backed by the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Indonesian maestro, Erwin
Gutawa where the concert was even attended by the Sultan and Sultanah of Pahang and royal families from Brunei.[59] In the same year, Channel
V listed her as the Second Biggest Asian Artist for her achievements, trailing behind Taiwanese singer Jay Chou, who is on the top of the
list.[21][57] Coincidentally, MTV Asia also rated her as the Second Asia's Best Musical Artist, also behind the same Taiwanese artiste, Jay Chou.[21]

Muzik.[62][63] It also received praises before by critics as one of her best albums ever produced[64][65] and the album released was her debut attempt of
producing an album under her own production company.[61][66] On 24 October 2006, she was conferred as "Dato'" after receiving the title of Darjah
Indera Mahkota Pahang (DIMP) from the Sultan of Pahang, Sultan Ahmad Shah on his 76th birthday alongside two Malaysian designers, Bernard
Chandran and Dayang Tom Abang Saufi.[1][67]

walk the red carpet.[68] On 20 and 21 April 2007, She performed at the Konsert Istana Cinta Nostalgia, which was a tribute concert for the late Tan Sri
P. Ramlee and Puan Sri Saloma at Istana Budaya, Kuala Lumpur. The concert featured popular songs composed by Tan Sri P. Ramlee himself,

Best Song (Biarlah Rahsia) and Best Album.[70] She won three out of five – Most Popular Female Artist, Best Female Artist and Best Song.[71]

Hadiah Daripada Hati, Lentera Timur and other works (2007–2008)[edit]

Siti Nurhaliza was the first Malaysian to be given the honour of walking up the red carpet meant for invited celebrities at the Grammy Awards held at
Staples Centre in Los Angeles on 11 February 2007, after she won the two tickets as Best Dressed celebrity at Star World's "Breakfast With the Stars"
in conjunction with the 78th Annual Academy Awards.[68] 2007 also showed Siti's participation on soundtracks for films where she recorded two songs
for two different films where she sang Menanti Pasti and Hati for Kayangan and 1957: Hati Malaya respectively. However, only the song Hati was
included in her twelfth studio album, Hadiah Daripada Hati[72] and also received the award of Best Original Theme Song from Anugerah Festival Filem
Malaysia ke-21 (21st Malaysian Film Festival) in 2008.[73] In the same year too she finally agrees to act in a production where she performed as
Azizah, P. Ramlee's mysterious lover, in the musical 'Remy ... Kisah P. Ramlee (Remy ... The Story of P. Ramlee), which is a tribute to the late P.
Ramlee, staged at Istana Budaya from 19 October to 3 November 2007.[74]
On 10 December of the same year, Siti's twelfth studio album Hadiah Daripada Hati was released, with the Latin-influenced pop song Ku Mahu as the
first single of this album and it was featured as the opening theme song for a local Malay drama, Spa-Q.[75] Later, Melawan Kesepian was chosen as
her second single and was the first track of this album to have a video clip. The song was a remake of a hit that was once popularised by an
Indonesian band called Jikustik.[76] Hadiah Daripada Hati came under criticism from the press when it was released. Critics said it was a moderate
performance from her and was not on the same par as her previous album Transkripsi, which was touted as the best album she had ever
made.[77][78] But these criticisms were rebutted when Hadiah Daripada Hati received five nominations in the 15th edition of AIM including Best Pop
Album, Song of The Year, Best Vocal Performance in an Album (Female), Best Arrangement and Best Album Cover making Siti the second nominee
with the most nominations after newcomer Faizal Tahir.[79][80] Out of five categories including three multiple nominations for Best Arrangement
category,[80] the album earned her three awards for Best Pop Album, Best Musical Arrangement in a Song (Malay) for the song Cintamu as well as her
ninth Best Vocal Performance in an Album (Female) in which she had lost to Jaclyn Victor the previous year.[81] Her acting debut in the musical
'Remy... The Story of P. Ramlee' also saw the debut of her third single Mulanya Cinta, which was composed by Dick Lee, a Singaporean
composer.[82] Siti has also become one of the most frequently searched persons on Google by Malaysian Google users, according to Google's 2007
Malaysia Year-End Zeitgeist, beating celebrities like Paris Hilton and Britney Spears.[83]

In January 2008, she was cited as one of the Asia's Idols by Asia News Network for her exemplary achievements and gaining the status as the icon of
Malaysian entertainment.[22] and on 21 March 2008, Siti held one of her first solo acoustic concert at the Esplanade Theatre in Singapore. The concert
was called Diari Hati - Dato' Siti Nurhaliza's Heart (Diary of Dato' Siti Nurhaliza's Heart) where she performed numbers of her hits from her latest
album, Hadiah Daripada Hati and previous albums.[84]
26 December 2008, was the release date of her 13th album, Lentera Timur, her most recent traditional contemporary album, Irama Malaysia (her
fourth Ethnic Creative album) since her third one, Sanggar Mustika in 2002.[85] She commented that the album has more modern and contemporary
songs unlike her usual traditional genre.[86] For that album, she worked with multiple international composers like Singapore's M. Nasir and Indonesia's
Katon Bagaskara. Nine out of 13 songs (which all was created and composed under three days) that have been chosen came from a songwriting
workshop, Cipta Ekspress – Berirama Malaysia. The event which was organised by Malaysian Authors Copyright Protection (MACP) was specially
organised to find the materials for the album.[85] Despite of the poor sale due to the lack of promotions, the quality of the album has never been
denied[87] where it was evident when during the 16th Anugerah Industri Muzik, Lentera Timur grabbed multiple awards including Best Pop Ethnic and
later on honoured as Album of the Year in AIM 16. She also took home Best Female Vocal trophy for the song 'Di Taman Teman'. She was not
present at the award ceremony however as she was away to Mecca to perform Umrah with her family.[88]
Siti has also recorded two songs for the soundtrack for an Indonesian film, Perempuan Berkalong Sorban. One of the songs recorded is a cover of
Opick's Ketika Cinta and also a new song, Batasku Asaku which was written by Siti herself.[89] Both songs were included in her fourteenth
album, Tahajjud Cinta.[87]
In the same year, her wealth is said to have reached RM 50 Million by MTV Asia and was named one of the millionaires in entertainment in South
East Asia.[13]

album was released on 28 December in Malaysia[98] and 27 January in Indonesia,[99] under the name CTKD where it is an abbreviation with double
meaning where it stands as the acronyms for the combination of both singers names, CT and KD, and also as the whole title of the album, which
is Canda (Joke), Tangis (Cry), Ketawa (Laugh) and Duka(Sad).[99]
In July, her skill as a former ambassador for the Malaysian Red Crescent Society was put to the test when she and a panel doctor of Media
