Suddenly it starts to rain. The children

cannot play at the park now because they
will get wet. The children must play indoors.
What will they do inside on a rainy day?

Chapter 2:
Planning the
Mini Park
Jasmine has a great idea. They can build a
mini-park. They can make a small park that
looks like the real park! The mini-park will fit
on a table and be made of things they have
at home.

ca24xs_lay_070109af_kb.indd 6 1/9/07 9:47:08 PM

Everyone will collect things from their
homes for the mini-park. Then they will meet
at Andrew’s home, and they will build the
mini-park there.

Chapter 3:
Searching

Jenny finds some empty paper rolls at her

home. They look like the tunnel slides at the
new park. Jenny and Jasmine had fun playing
on the tunnel slides at the park.

ca24xs_lay_070109af_kb.indd 8 1/9/07 9:47:09 PM

DIGITAL FINAL PROOF

The paper rolls are cylinders, and the

tunnel slides are cylinders too. Jenny brings
the paper rolls to Andrew’s home. She will
build a tunnel slide for the mini-park they are
making together.

Luis looks in his toy box. In with all the

toys, he finds a building block that is shaped
like the play house at the park.

DIGITAL FINAL PROOF

The building block is a pyramid. The play

house has a pyramid too. Luis brings the
building block to Andrew’s home.

Maddie finds a table tennis ball in the

garage. She and Sam played with a red ball at
the park. The table tennis ball is a small ball,
and it is a sphere. The red ball at the park is
a sphere too.

DIGITAL FINAL PROOF

Maddie puts the table tennis ball in her

pocket. She brings it to Andrew’s home. They
can put it in the mini-park like the red ball
they played with in the new park.

DIGITAL FINAL PROOF

Sam remembers a building he saw at the

park. He wants to find something that has
the same shape as the building. He finds an
empty tissue box.

14

ca24xs_lay_070109af_kb.indd 14 1/9/07 9:47:17 PM

The empty tissue box is a cube. The park
building is a cube too. Sam thinks the tissue
box will be perfect to make the building for
the mini-park.

15
DIGITAL FINAL PROOF

Jasmine saw a snack stand at the park.

The snack stand had a cone on the roof.
Jasmine wants to find something the same
shape as that cone.

DIGITAL FINAL PROOF

She finds a colorful party hat. The party

hat is a cone. It looks like the cone on the
roof of the snack stand. Jasmine brings the
party hat to Andrew’s home.

At the park, the children sat on a bench
to rest and talk. It was a good place to rest
after playing. The park bench is a rectangular
prism.

18
Andrew finds an empty shoebox. The
shoebox is a rectangular prism. He will use
the shoebox for the bench in the mini-park.
Then the mini-park will have a park bench!

19
Chapter 4:
Time to Build!

Soon the children arrive at Andrew’s home

carrying the things they found for the
mini-park. Andrew places a big poster board
on the table. He finds crayons, scissors, glue,
and tape for everyone to use.

20
DIGITAL FINAL PROOF

The children are very excited. They share

with each other the things they have found.
Now they have everything they need to build
the mini-park.

Think and Respond
1. Look at the pictures throughout the
book. List the figures you see.

2. The children in the story used a shoebox

in their mini park. Name another object
from home that is a rectangular prism.

3. The children used paper rolls for a tunnel

slide. Name some things at home that are
cylinders.

4. Suppose you want to make a mini-

bedroom. Draw something you would put
in the bedroom. List things you could use
to make it.
