What are Thermocouples?
Thermocouples are sensors widely used in
the industries to measure temperature

Operating principle
Made of 2 different conductors
A current will flow due to a difference in
temperature between the 2 junctions !
Thermoelectric effect
The voltage measured at one end is a
function of the temperature at the other end

Types of Thermocouples
There are altogether 8 types ! Type J & Type

Temperature sensors - RTD
What are RTDs?
" RTD is the abbreviation for Resistance
Temperature Detector

Operating principle
" The RTD element is made from a pure
material, typically platinum, nickel or copper.
" It has a predictable change in resistance
as the temperature changes

Types of RTDs
" The most commonly used is Pt100
" It has a nominal resistance of 100 at 0 C
('Pt' is the symbol for platinum, 100 for the
resistance in ohm at 0 C)
