Issue 3: Global Knowledge Transfer

User Group Conclusions: Global Knowledge Transfer needs to be developed further. Sharing
experiences from one operator to another operator can help resolve issues proactively. This
includes knowledge transfer to frontline and from local staff to operators (e.g. knowledge
sharing on new technologies like LTE, Femtocell, etc.)

Hot Topics:
We will use this newsletter and frontline communication to maintain a profile of leading hot
topics for sharing on a global basis.

Web-based Case Study Summaries:

For each hot topic, we will load at least one Case Study Summary to a dedicated user group
website and publish a list of new summaries with links in each subsequent newsletter.

Based on your expressed interests, we intend to share the latest solutions or features in the
context of current operator deployments. In turn, we believe this new process will help prevent
network problems and increase early awareness of challenges and opportunities.

The following is an example of how these Case Study Summaries may be presented (If you are
interested in this Case Study, or have other specific subjects you would like to see shared,
please let us know)

CASE STUDY SUMMARY 1.08.2011/SingleRAN Evolution Changing the Digital

Flood to a Digital Canal
Abstract:
Huawei released the SingleRAN Evolution solution in April 2011 during the Huawei global
analyst summit. The solution aims to solve the doubling of annual traffic growth to come in each
of the next 10 years. Traffic will by then be 1000 times today’s traffic. The SingleRAN Evolution
solution provides tremendous traffic capacity to deal with the digital flood by making the
network “Broader,” “Closer,” and “Smarter” to the end users.

Detail:
“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times” - Dickens

In the past 6 months, Android handset shipments increased 400% while Android application
downloads increased 600% in China. As we estimated 2 years ago, the increase of smartphone
usage is driving the boom of MBB. In the past 3 years mobile traffic has doubled in each year.
We forecast that MBB traffic will increase 500 times in the next 10 years. This digital flood will
have a huge impact on the industry, obliterating industry borders. It will completely change the
operation mode, and the network design philosophy. We believe this will have a positive long
term effect on the industry. When the Nile River flooded, although villages were lost, it left Egypt
with fertile soil. After the transformation ushered in by this digital flood, we will see a flourishing

new industry.

What should the network design philosophy be in order to help the operator compete effectively
in the MBB arena? SingleRAN Evolution is a type of MBB-oriented network design philosophy.
The core elements of SingleRAN Evolution include Broader, Closer and Smarter. Broader refer
to broadening the radio of the site continuously to maximize the site value. Closer refer to
introducing HetNet architecture and building small cells as close as possible to the user in
hotspots to catch the traffic efficiently. Smarter refer to optimizing the network end to end base
visibility, thereby guaranteeing network safety and user experience.

Broader
The investment on site is the most important component of operator pay. Deciphering how to
improve site capacity to maximize site value is the key to developing MBB efficiently. There are
4 approaches to improving site capacity. The first is spectrum acquirement, which includes
spectrum purchase and Refarming. As an economic and efficiency way, GU and GL Refarming
have already been adopted by Europe operators. The second is algorithm enhancement, which
includes MIMO prime, MIMO, DC, IC, and CA. Unlike the gain from MIMO, which depends on
the MIMO device penetration, MIMO prime can work on all kinds of terminals. With the dual
TX channel module, MIMO prime can improve average throughput gain 11% and the single
user throughput gain up to 20%. The third is cell split, 6 sectors normally, which can lead to 80%
capacity gain by spectrum multiplexing. With 3mRRU, with a size of only 12L, it will be very
easy and fast to build 6 sectors on site. The forth is to adopt the Active Antenna System, which
integrates radio inside the antenna. The Active Antenna System can improve the site capacity
significantly by independent tilt, cell split and beam forming. Meanwhile, it also can reduce the
component on the tower to save OPEX for operator.

Closer
The MBB traffic is uneven for different locations - 20% of the sites take 80% of the traffic. Traffic
on the hottest site takes 7 times higher traffic than the average. How can we resolve the
capacity issue of these 20% sites? The traditional single layer Macro network cannot hold such
centralized traffic. So the multilayer HetNet architecture is introduced. The Micro BTS, with
features such as small size, flexible backhaul, and Plug and Play represent key aspects of a
HetNet solution. Besides delivering an accurate traffic map, this solution can find the real
hotspot accurately so that the operator can build Small cells on demand efficiently. With cloud
technology introduced, tighter cooperation between Macro and small cell will lead to more
efficiency in the future.

Smarter
User experience guarantee is critical for a successful MBB operation. The open handset
platform and all IP network make it very difficult to find the issues which influences user
experience. Network visibility will be the basic ability of the MBB network. With the analysis
base on service awareness, handset awareness, network resource information and user
subscription information, the operator can find the issues and optimize the services. From

visibility to analysis and policy making, then to optimization of the network, this will build an
organic circle to help the operator guarantee the network safety and user experience.

circumstance will be turned into efficiency never before seen
