 PROGRAM  SY  2015-­‐2016  


STUDENT  POLICIES  
 
READINESS  
Responsibility  to  dispose  oneself  physically,  mentally,  emotionally  and  spiritually  to  undergo  the  formation  
programs  
 
Rationale:  Students  are  expected  to  prepare  themselves  for  all  activities  of  the  program.  Being  physically,  
mentally,  emotionally  and  spiritually  prepared  is  a  shared  responsibility  between  the  formator  and  the  students.    
Since  engagement  in  communities  is  valued  in  the  program,  the  readiness  of  students  is  non-­‐negotiable.  It  is  
therefore  the  responsibility  of  students  to:  
o Attend  all  pre-­‐engagement  activities;  and  
o Submit  all  pre-­‐engagement  requirements  (clearances  and  permits)  
 
• Students  who  sign-­‐up  for  the  Praxis  immersion  are  expected  to  attend  all  preparatory  activities  
namely:  
o Classroom  Orientation  
o Praxis  Program  Orientation  
o Integration  Workshop  
Students  who  do  not  attend  all  these  sessions  will  forfeit  their  slot.  
 
• To  ensure  that  the  students  are  physically  fit  to  participate  in  the  immersion,  the  students  should  
undergo  a  medical  check-­‐up  the  results  of  which  should  be  submitted  to  the  formator-­‐in-­‐charge  
during  the  Integration  Workshop  
 
• The  students  are  expected  to  submit  their  parent’s  reply  slip  during  the  Integration  Workshop  
 
• Students  are  expected  to  familiarize  themselves  with  the  details  of  the  area  by  reading  the  Area  
Information  Report  (AIR)  which  will  be  given  to  them  during  the  week  of  the  immersion  
 
• Changes  regarding  the  flow  of  activities  or  tasks  for  the  weekend  will  be  coursed  through  the  group  
leader  
 
 
SAFETY  AND  SECURITY  
Responsibility  of  OSCI,  areas  and  students  to  ensure  safety  and  security  during  area  visits  
   
Student  responsibilities:  
o Prepare  self  (by  knowing  basic  information,  the  objectives  of  the  program)/  Familiarize  
themselves  with  the  area  location  
o Be  responsible  for  oneself  and  one’s  belongings  
o Be  accountable  to  peers  and  those  in  the  area  
o Be  respectful  of  both  written  and  verbal  guidelines  set  by  OSCI,  the  partner  
institution/community  and  the  University  
o Conduct  one’s  self  according  to  the  objectives  of  the  program  and  context  of  the  area.  
   
OSCI  responsibilities:  
o Identify  communities  and  designated  fields  of  engagement  
o Identify  transportation  provisions  going  to  and  coming  from  the  area  
o Implement  monitoring  systems  for  student  activities  
o Craft  an  emergency  plan  
 
Area  responsibilities  
o Designate  a  field  of  engagement  
o Implement  a  monitoring  system  for  student  activities  
o Craft  an  emergency  plan  
 
Rationale:  It  is  the  primary  responsibility  of  the  formators  to  ensure  the  safety  and  security  of  the  
students.  However,  students  also  have  obligations  to  ensure  the  safety  and  security  of  the  community’s  
members,  their  formator  and  their  peers.    
 
These  obligations  are  to:  
o Know  basic  information  such  as  objectives,  schedules,  requirements  etc.  
o Look  after  their  and  their  peers’  belongings.  
o Be  accountable  to  their  peers  and  those  in  the  area    (Brother’s  keeper)  
o Respect  (written  and  verbal)  guidelines  set  by  OSCI,  the  partner  institution/  community  and  
the  University  
o Conduct  oneself  according  to  the  objectives  of  the  program  and  context  of  the  area  
o Observe  parameters  of  engagement:    Dress  code;  things  to  bring  and  not  to  bring,  area  
boundaries  
o Follow  transportation  guidelines  
o Report  any  untoward  incident  
o Properly  inform  guardians  
o personal  security  details  
 
• For  safety  reasons,  the  formator  will  designate  an  assembly  place  going  to  and  from  the  area  
before  actual  departure  
• Students  must  look  after  him/herself  as  well  as  his/her  peers  during  the  ride  to  and  from  the  
area  
• Students  who  are  left  behind  may  not  follow  on  their  own  going  to  the  area  
• For  any  concerns  in  the  area,  students  are  expected  to  approach  the  formator  or  their  foster  
parents  
• Students  must  always  inform  the  formator-­‐in-­‐charge  and  their  foster  parents  of  their  
whereabouts  during  the  whole  immersion.  Students  may  not  leave  the  premises  of  the  
community  without  permission  from  the  formator  
• Students  are  expected  to  bring  their  school  ID  for  security  purposes  
• Students  are  encouraged  to  bring  only  the  advised  amount  by  the  formator,  which  will  cover  
food,  transportation  &  contingency  expenses  
 
 
TASK-­‐RELATED  OR  TECHNICAL  COMPETENCY    
Responsibility  of  the  student  to  perform  their  task  with  the  required  competencies  
   
Rationale:   Students   are   expected   to   provide   high   quality   outputs   as   a   result   of   their   best   efforts   and  
their  desire  to  be  excellent  in  serving.      
Professionalism   is   expected   from   every   student   therefore   It   is   their   responsibility   to   prepare   for   each  
engagement  and  to  execute  activities  with  diligence  and  care.    
 
It  is  the  responsibility  of  students  to:    
o Attend  task-­‐related  orientation  and  training  of  the  program  
o Use  materials  necessary  for  the  implementation  of  their  task  
o Follow  the  work  plan  
o Submit  required  outputs  
o Follow  institutional  policies  and  university  research  ethics  
 
• Students  going  back  to  the  community  or  institution  should  consult  their  OSCI  Formator-­‐in-­‐
Charge  at  least  one  week  before  their  intended  day  of  visit  
 
• Students  with  projects  are  expected  to  provide  their  documentation  to  the  community  and  
OSCI  
 
 
ATTENDANCE  AND  PARTICIPATION  
o Active  engagement  in  all  activities  
o Physical  presence  in  all  activities  
o Punctuality  and  respect  for    diligence  
 
• Students  who  sign-­‐up  for  the  Praxis  immersion  should  complete  all  activities  laid  down  by  
the  program.  
• Students  must  attend  and  participate  actively  in  the  activities  set  during  the  two-­‐and-­‐a-­‐half  
days  of  engagement  in  the  community/institution  to  be  considered  as  a  complete  immersion  
experience.  
 
 
DECORUM  OR  INTEGRATION  SKILLS:  SENSITIVITY  AND  ADAPTABILITY  
Recognition  of  their  moral  responsibilities  to  others,  particularly  the  preferential  option  for  the  poor  and  
to  themselves  (Article  III,  Section  3)  
o Conduct  oneself  according  to  the  objectives  of  the  program  and  context  of  the  area  as  a  
manifestation  of  respect  for  others  
o Be  aware  of  the  situation    and  culture  in  the  area  
o Be  conscious  of  one’s  disposition  to  deliberately  appropriate  one’s  actions  
o Be  generosity  with  regards  to  one’s  skills  and  strengths  
 
Rationale:  Cura  Personalis  or  care  for  the  person/s  is  a  value  we  promote  to  our  students  
whenever  they  interact  with  their  peers,  formators  and  people  from  the  community  or  institution.  
Students  are  expected  to  (be  mindful  of  themselves  and)  proceed  with  sensitivity,  adaptability  and  
generosity  as  they  conduct  themselves  in  the  engagements.      
 
Students  are  to  follow  the  guidelines  regarding  the  following:    
o Dress  code  
o Things  to  say  and  not  to  say  
o Things  to  bring  and  not  to  bring  
o Attendance  in  integration  session  (Integration  tips)  
o School  Policies  (no  smoking,  gambling  and  drinking)  
o Participation  in  task  
o Follow  institutional  policies  
 
• Students  are  expected  to  abide  by  written  policies  or  policies  communicated  to  them  
verbally  by  the  formator,  the  community  or  institution.    These  behaviors  and  policies  are  
discussed  by  their  OSCI  Formator-­‐in-­‐charge,  contact  persons,  area  leaders  and  foster  family  
 
• The  students  are  expected  to:  
o Be  sensitive  to  the  people  and  their  way  of  life  in  the  community.  Eat,  sleep  and  live  as  
the  people  in  the  community  do  
o Be  prepared  for  any  discomfort  that  may  be  experienced  in  the  area;  engage  in  chores,  
converse,  anticipate  changes  in  schedule  
o Be  contented  with  whatever  the  community  or  foster  family  will  be  able  to  provide  for  
the  duration  of  his/her  stay  in  the  area  
o Focus  all  their  attention  and  tasks  during  the  immersion  weekend  towards  the  
community  or  institution  they  will  go  to  
o Spend  time  with  their  boster  families  and  the  people  in  the  community.  Avoid  spending  
time  with  your  co-­‐immersees  since  there  will  be  a  time  for  this.  
o Use  words  such  as  po  and  opo  
o Wear  appropriate  clothing  for  the  weekend  
o Do  not    wear  jewelry  in  the  area  
o Do  not  bring  materials  (e.g.  homework,  electronic  gadgets)  that  will  interfere  with  fully  
immersing  with  the  community  
o Do  not  gamble,  drink  and  other  vices  while  in  the  area  
o Avoid  public  display  of  affection  
 
• Other  reminder:  OSCI  does  not  allow  personal  donations.  Students  should  consult  with  the  
OSCI  formator-­‐in-­‐charge  to  discuss  any  project  or  effort  for  the  community  or  institution
