ALL THE NEWS

FROM CDA
It’s the time of year to reflect on

A Message
our achievements as a charity. One
aspect of our work I’ve been really
impressed with is fundraising. We’ve

from the
had a busy year!
It began with a £40,000 grant
from Comic Relief which led to the
recruitment of our Trust Fundraiser Rory

Chairperson
Munro. Since then he’s been busy raising

Janie
money for projects and had a number
of successes.
He’s raised money to improve our studio
so we can make better BSL videos,
raised money for projects to teach BSL
and next year we will be beginning a new project to focus on deaf people and mental health. All that
amongst other successful bids too all aimed at improving the lives of local deaf people.
We also had the busiest year ever. We were contacted over 800 times for support or advocacy across
all the projects we work on. We also grew our staff and services with more people working for CDA than
ever supporting more people in a growing deaf community. Not just that but we also invested record
amounts in training our staff with the right skills to provide our services.
I know everyone at CDA is looking forward to another exciting year. Personally, I’m looking forward to
attending the Signed Christmas Carol Service which is in Huntingdon this year (10th December). The carol
events organized by Cambridgeshire Deaf Church always feel special and bring our community together.
I hope that you too find time this Christmas to be together with your friends and family and on behalf of
everyone at CDA, I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

EVENTS Deaf Yoga has been a free enjoyable event for people
to relax. This runs at CDA every 3rd Tuesday of the

OVER 50’s
CLUB
The Over 50’s
club had a trip to
Scottsdale Garden
Centre where they
watched a BSL video
about scams. People
were able to share
their experiences and
prevent others from
being scammed in the
future.

There was also a trip

to London Sky Garden
where lots of people
attended from all over
the county.

SOCIAL
MEDIA
JUST 2 PLACES LEFT! Run the Cambridge Half
Marathon for CDA and get free sign language lessons.
The event itself sold out in a few days. Join us in
March next year. It’s a great excuse to stay fit over
winter. For more information, see our website.

We had the pleasure of BBC’s Daryl Jackson in the

studio translating the report from Healthwatch. This
looks into deaf people’s experiences with the NHS
and social care.

HEALTH
WATCH
Healthwatch have produced a new report titled
“Accessible Information as Standard”, which
aims to help improve access to health and
care services for deaf people, disabled people
and those with sensory and learning disabilities
or difficulties. CDA have been working with
Healthwatch to get the views of deaf people to
try and improve health and social care. Deaf
people have been to meetings in Peterborough,
Cambridge and Huntington to give their views.
