Plan Outlining Goals, Sub-goals, Strategies and Measures

GOAL 1: Engaging students in higher-order thinking challenges (e.g., inquiry,


investigation, problem-based learning, action research projects)
TQS Focus:
(2B) Planning and designing learning activities that:
 Consider a range of instructional strategies, including the appropriate use(s) of
digital technology, according to the context, content, desired outcomes and the
learning needs of students.
 Enable all students to develop and enhance skills in literacy and numeracy,
including reading, writing, mathematics, technology, languages and media.

Sub-goal 1: Encourage and challenge students to support their written and spoken
ideas with evidence.

Strategy 1.1 Research based learning (incorporating technology, library resources, books
etc.)

Strategy 1.2 Critical thinking challenges: asking meaningful questions (WHY, who, what,
when, where - extend student thinking)

Strategy 1.3 In-class debates

Measures: Formative and summative assessments of critical thinking throughout the year. Using
rubrics to analyze student progress.

Sub-goal 2: Teaching students how to use strategies on their own, as tools and
frameworks for thinking and learning

Strategy 2.1 Model different techniques for delivering information (e.g., visual, interactive,
kinesthetic etc.)

Strategy 2.2 Encourage choice and creativity (e.g., options in presentation of learning)

Strategy 2.3 Encourage independence and self-reflection in daily life/ classroom behaviors
(e.g., buddies)

Measures: Assessment of originality, creativity and independence added to rubrics and marking
schemes. This can be measured not only through writing, but behavior and problem solving in all
areas.
GOAL 2: Engage students in diverse forms of thinking (e.g. practical, analytical,
creative, exploring feelings.)
 TQS Focus:
(4E) Recognizing and responding to students’ learning needs with supports, including
assistive technologies where required, to enable and/or improve learning.
(4F) Incorporating students’ personal and cultural strengths into teaching and learning.
(4G) Providing opportunities for student leadership.

Sub-goal 1: Employing a wide variety of tools and strategies to keep teaching fresh and
students excited and on task
Strategy 1.1 Differentiating instruction and assessment so students can all enjoy the joys of
success (scaffolding, differentiating learning)
Strategy 1. 2 Use SMARTboard technology and other technology to engage students
Strategy 1.3 Introduce kinesthetic activities in each subject area
Measures: Evidence of success include more active participation and added focus and engagement
in all subject areas.

Sub-goal 2: Encouraging students to pursue their own interests, make their own
choices, develop their own perspectives, and express their values and dreams.
Strategy 2.1 Independent research projects
Strategy 2.2 Class routines: agenda completion each day, getting signatures, packing
backpacks, keeping area clean, following instructions, respecting rules and
classmates
Strategy 2.3 Self-expression projects: Who am I, my beliefs etc.
Measures: Students will demonstrate increased focus, and higher quality written, oral and visual
work due to personal interest and independence.
