MHSSCE, Byculla Bags 17th National Award at Kolkatta on 21 Dec 2017

In a proud moment for the M H Saboo Siddik College of Engineering, Byculla, University of
Mumbai, Maharashtra at the 17th national award competition for students on Best Innovative
Structural Steel Design for Inter State Bus Terminal (Darbhanga) for Smart City bagged the first
prize. A team of four students guided by Dr Kame Ganesh, Professor, Department of Civil
Engineering was selected as winner for this National Award on 21st Dec. 2017 at Kolkatta. The
total prizes worth Rs. 90 thousands were awarded in this competition. The 1st Prize awarded to
MHSSCE is Rs. 35,000/- + Certificate and Trophy.

Twenty individuals/groups from IITS, NIIT and different engineering colleges all over the India
participated in this competition. Out of those eight were shortlisted for the final round in
Kolkata. The presentations made in the final round were judged by the central selection
committee comprising of eminent Professors from Premium Engineering Institutes and
Professionals from reputed Organizations. The competition, which was into its 17th year,
rewarded talented students of civil/structural engineering in India for excellence and innovation
in structural steel design. This year’s theme ‘Best Innovative Structural Steel Design for Inter
State Bus Terminal (Darbhanga) for Smart City, was very topical and inspired by projects
which are currently in great demand in the country.

About INSDAG
The Institute for Steel Development & Growth (INSDAG), with its registered office in Kolkata,
is a non-profit making, member-based organization established by the Government of India
(Ministry of Steel) and the major steel producers of the country. INSDAG works towards the
development of advanced design methodologies and technical marketing by expanding
applications of steel in different segments of the industry, upgrading skills and knowledge,
creating awareness among potential users, communicating the benefits. Established in line with
Steel Construction Institute (SCI), UK, the founding members of INSDAG include major steel
companies such as SAIL, Tata Steel, JSW Steel, RINL, Essar Steel, and Ispat Industries
(presently part of JSW Steel), apart from distinguished government bodies like the Ministry of
Steel.

About National Award Schemes

The organization has set up National Award Schemes to encourage students and to recognize and
reward the contributions of professionals to the industry. It conducts national level competitions
for students of civil engineering and architecture. It also conducts a national level competition
for industry professionals.

Eligibility:

The National Award Competition was open to the prefinal and final year UG & PG Engineering
Students (for UG students, individual participant / team of maximum 4 students in the team &
for PG students only 1 PG student either individually or in a team with maximum 3 UG students)
from any IIT, NIIT and AICTE approved University / Institute in India.

The Selection:
Four Zonal Selection Committees (one each from the East, West, North and South Zones)
consisting of renowned academics and professional engineers were entrusted the task of
preliminary screening of the entries received in each zone. In this initial round, 16 (sixteen) best
entries were to be selected (four from each zone) based on overall merit of the proposals, in
accordance with the criteria formulated by the Committees. Short listed entries were invited to
Kolkata to display and present important aspects of their entry before the Central Selection
Committee during the Final Round of Competition on 21 December 2017. The top four entries
were awarded with Prizes.
