Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1986.
Recalling it more than 30
years later, she was surprised
by how quickly a remark of
interest to the local rotary club
turned into a plane ticket to
Brazil’s most populated city -
while she barely knew a word of
Portuguese.
The transition from a small
town to a large city is daunting
enough, but to do so in a differ-
ent county, and in a different
language was a challenge, she
remembered.
