INTRODUCTION
ABAQUS is a software suite for finite element
analysis and computer aided engineering, originally released in 1978.
The name and logo of this software are based on
the Abaqus calculation tool. The Abaqus product suite consists of
five core software products:

HISTORY
Abaqus company was founded in 1978 by Dr. David Hibbitt, Dr.
Bengt Karlsson, and Dr. Paul Sorensen with the original name
Hibbitt, Karlsson & Sorensen, Inc., (HKS). Later on, the company
name was changed to ABAQUS Inc. before the acquisition by
Dassault Systèmes in 2005. After that, it became part of Dassault
Systèmes Simulia Corp. The headquarters of the company was
located in Providence, Rhode Island until 2014. Since 2014, the
headquarters of the company are located in Johnston, Rhode Island,
United States.

ABAQUS SOFTWARE PRODUCTS
1. Abaqus/CAE, or ‘‘Complete Abaqus Environment’’. It is a
software application used for both the modeling and analysis of
mechanical components and assemblies (pre-processing) and
visualizing the finite element analysis result

2. Abaqus/Standard, a general-purpose Finite-Element analyzer

that employs implicit integration scheme (traditional).

3. Abaqus/Explicit, a special-purpose Finite-Element analyzer that
employs explicit integration scheme to solve highly nonlinear
systems with many complex contacts under transient loads.

4. Abaqus/CFD, a Computational Fluid Dynamics software

application which provides advanced computational fluid
dynamics capabilities with extensive support for pre processing
and post processing provided in Abaqus/CAE.

5. Abaqus/Electromagnetic, a Comp. electromagnetics software

application which solves advanced computational electromagnetic
problems.

CALCULATION OF PLY
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES

To model a composite material in the Abaqus FEA package the

individual ply’s mechanical properties need to be calculated. These
will determine how the material behaves in the simulations. To fully
model a composite in the FEA program used six composite
properties are required: E1, E2, V12, G12, G13, and G23

INTEGRATION POINTS
The number of integration points used in that element, node
connection order and either the result on the top surface or the
bottom surface for a shell element. It does not provide u the results at
each integration point of a particular element.
SECTION INTEGRATION
Set SECTION INTEGRATION=SIMPSON (default) to use Simpson's rule for the
shell section integration.
Set SECTION INTEGRATION=GAUSS to use Gauss quadrature for the shell
section integration. Gauss quadrature cannot be used for heat transfer or thermally
coupled shell elements.

PARTS AND INSTANCES
Parts are the master components. These are not directly assembled.
Instances are the copies of parts which make up the assembly.

Need for Instances

 Instance in addition to containing all the information of the Part

has information about its positioning in the assembly (using a
translation and rotation vector).
 If the assembly contains multiple copies of a component (Part)
then this is facilitated by having multiple instances of the part.

RESULTS
We can view results in visualisation of abaqus modules. A subset of
Abaqus/CAE including only the post-processing module can be
launched independently in the Abaqus/Viewer product.

APPLICATIONS
Abaqus is used in the automotive, aerospace, and industrial products
industries. Abaqus also provides a good collection
of multiphysics capabilities, such as coupled acoustic-
structural, piezoelectric, and structural-pore capabilities, making it
attractive for production-level simulations where multiple fields need
to be coupled.
