Postgraduate program Curriculum Review

In

INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

For

Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Quality and Reliability

Engineering

November 18,2017
1. Major General comments and Recommendation
 Lack of Uniformity of course breakdown: at some place the course outline
major topics are sub classified in numbering
 The graduate seminar and thesis assessment and grading criteria are not seen
in the course break down
 BPR should not be as a course topic. It is not well described and the
description of the course outline indicates that unnecessary of it as standalone.
It is better if we substitute it with----
 Under quality engineering, probability and statistical method and research
methodology, design of experiment and testing hypothesis have been
mentioned. It is not necessary to be at both places for the same students at the
same program. It is waste of time and redundancy.
 Grammatical errors and some punctuations that lead to different
interpretation
 It is better to use the term “manpower” by “human power” as there is a gender
issues
 Document formatting is needed strongly
 Some abbreviation like CIM, JIT, etc. are not expanded and confuse the reader
2. Points to be highlighted in Document

4. Under Topic 4. Objectives and Mission of the Program

 Vision is better if included

Under Topic 7: 7. Admission and Graduation Requirements
 7.1. Admissions Requirements and Prerequisites (SECTION 7: 7.1)
Table 1: Summery of Admission Requirement and Pre-Requisites
Field of UG specializations Prerequisites
 Industrial engineering  Applied mathematics
 Manufacturing engineering  Probability and statistics
 Mechanical engineering  Basic computer skills
 Chemical engineering  Other basic engineering courses
 Management technology  Decisions of DGC for candidates who
 Construction management fields fail to meet the pre-requisites

 You said that Performance on the entrance exam accompanied with the approval of
Department Graduate Council (DGC).
(What is the minimum entrance and passing exam point? Along with the DGC
approval comments)
 7. In addition, applicant should be free of cost sharing
 Under 7.2. Graduation Requirements
 ...successfully defending thesis work of 6 credit hours (25 ECTS which
can be completed in one semester or may even extend depending the
performance of the students) with minimum achievement of ‘good’.
Why not satisfactory...
A student is required to complete the Masters Study…
 With minimum CGPA of 3.00. If he or she does not meet this
requirement, what shall you do?
 ….If a student couldn’t complete his/her thesis in one semester, it can be extended to a
maximum of two additional semesters. If she/he does not meet this time bound, what is
your decision?

Under topic 9: Method of Evaluation, Assessment and grading

 B) Thesis grading---- poor term has no any meaning instead it is better to use
“Satisfactory” and consider it as minimum passing grade.

Under Topic 12: Degree of Nomenclature

 A candidate upon completion of the two semester module works & Research Methodology and
he/she fails to commence, what type of nomenclature is provided? This should be stated and
defined.

Under topic 13: STAFF PROFILE

 Staff requirements and
 Qualifications has not been stated

Under topic 15: Resource Requirements (are not mentioned in the curriculum
development)

 Human Resource
 Laboratory/Library
 Materials for Teaching & Research

Under topic 15: PROGRAMME COMPOSITION

 Elective courses should be designed example: Six Sigma ( elective)

 Industrial Internship that allow the students to select their topic during the
study

Under topic 17: Course Description and Course Outline

 In some course descriptions, the course objectives, course descriptions and

references (Text books) are not defined.

IEng 6011: Work Study and Methods Engineering

Course Code: IEng 6011 Credit Hours: 3 ECTS: 5
Course Title: Work Study and Methods Engineering Contact Hours: 2 Lecture hr. and 3 Tut hr.
Course Objectives:
At the end of the course, students would understand:
 XXXX
 XXXX
 XXXXX
Course Description:
XXXXXXXXXX
Course Outline:
1. Method analysis and time standards,
2. application of principles of motion economy; use of flow process charts and diagram, man machine
charts, micro-motion analysis SIMO chart, time formulas, work sampling, rating, standard data
systems and use of equipment related to this work,
3. Methods engineering and productivity concepts
4. Ergonomics : work space arrangement and design (additional points)
Pre-requisites: None
Textbook:
References:

 IEng 6031: Reliability Engineering and IEng 6032: Maintenance

Management merged and instead
….. IEng 6032: Industrial Project Management is introduced is better to
manage redundancy of topics. Because when we come under reliability and
maintenance course description, much of their content repeats at any points of
them.
 IEng 6036: Risk Assessment & Management: it is better if we improve it with
“Safety Engineering and Risk management” so that we make it
comprehensive.
 IEng 7031: Total Quality Management (TQM) and IEng 6033: Quality
Engineering: this two topics are more or less similar in contents unless we
remove some of the same course subsections contents that results in
redundancy.
 IEng 7041: Business Process Re-engineering (BPR): it is nice to consider this
BPR under the topic of TQM subtopics and “IEng 7041 Operation research
and Optimization”
 IEng 7012: Master’s Thesis: who or with what qualification the students are
advised?
Under Topic XZ: References

 No any references were mentioned how the curriculum organized

 How the justifications were given.

3. Questions
1. What is the distinct difference between “program objective” in section 4 and
“training objective” in section 6?
2. How to handle extension MSC students program?
