PHYSICS-I (10B11PH111), TUTORIAL SHEET – 1 (2010-11)

1. (a) Two coherent beams of wavelength 5000 Å reaching a point would individually produce intensities
1.44 and 4 units. If they reach there together, the intensity is 0.90 units. Calculate the lowest phase
difference with which the beams reach that point.
(b) In an interference pattern, the ratio between maximum and minimum intensities is 36: 1; find the ratio
between the amplitude and intensities of two interfering waves.
2. Two similar coherent sources produce interference pattern. Find the ratio of intensity at the centre of bright
fringe to the intensity at a point one quarter of the distance between two fringes from the centre.
3. Given light of wavelength 5100 Å from a narrow slit is incident on a double slit. If the overall separation of
10 fringes on the screen 200 cm away is 2 cm, find the double slit separation.
4. A double slit of separation 0.1 cm is illuminated by white light. A coloured interference pattern is formed
on the screen 100 cm away. If a pin hole is located on this screen at a distance of 2 cm from the central
white fringe, what wavelengths within the visible spectrum will be absent in the light transmitted through
the hole? (Wavelengths within the visible spectrum lie between 3500 Å and 7000 Å.)
5. In a two slit interference pattern with wavelength 6000 Å, the zero order and tenth order maxima fall at
12.34 mm and 14.73 mm respectively. If wavelength is changed to 5000 Å, deduce the positions of the zero
order and twentieth fringes, other arrangements remaining the same.
6. In a Young’s double slit experiment, the angular width of a fringe formed on a distant screen is 0.10. The
wavelength used is 6000 Å. What is the spacing between the slits?
7. A beam of light consisting of two wavelengths 6500 Å and 5200 Å is used to obtained interference fringes
in a Young’s double slit experiment. The distance between the slits is 2 mm, the distance between the plane
of slits and the screen is 120 cm. (a) Find the distance of the third bright fringe from the central maximum
for the wavelength 6500 Å (b) What is the least distance from the central maximum where the bright
fringes due to both the wavelengths coincide?
