Introduction

This is a practical course that provides a review of blasting theory and blasting products, and emphasizes
the design, assessment and optimization of blasting practices. The course focuses on drilling and blasting
as it is applied in surface mines and quarries. Design methodology for safe and efficient blasting is
provided. Monitoring and assessment to improve blast performance and reduce blast vibrations are
discussed and examples of optimization programs are provided to illustrate the process. Topics are
presented in an applied manner and address the impact of blasting on mine design and overall mining
efficiency.

Topics covered by the course include:

Explosives and Charging Systems

Initiating Devices and Systems

Production Bench Blasting

Overbreak Control and Secondary Blasting

Damage Control

Safety and Accident Prevention

Course Content

Blast Design and Assessment for Surface Mines and Quarries consists of 36 viewing sessions of 30 - 60
minutes each with supporting figures, tables and examples, a glossary of blasting and excavation
terminology, and interactive course reviews. The course includes several short video clips on production
blasting, interactive blasting tools, and integration with the Dictionary of Mining, Mineral and Related
Terms. Course duration is equivalent to approximately 30 hours of viewing content.

Brief Description:
This course covers the basics of commercial explosives and the application thereof in surface and underground
mining environments. Delegates will be trained in the basic theory of the subject and the application thereof,
whilst having the chance to interact with experts in the field. The course is comprehensive and is based on the
undergraduate Explosives Engineering course presented in the B.Eng Mining Engineering degree programme at
the University of Pretoria.

Learning Outcomes:
The detailed outcomes would be reached as presented in the industry syllabus, however on a broader base, the
course will be aimed at developing the candidate's abilities in the six cognitive levels; knowledge,
comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation.

Thus, when being examined on the topics detailed in this syllabus, candidates would be able to demonstrate
their capacity for:
- Comprehending and understanding the general blasting engineering principles covered in this syllabus and
applying these to solve real world blasting problems in the mining and
civil environments;
- Applying fundamental scientific knowledge, comprehension and understanding to predict the behaviour of
blasting in different types of risks in real world mining environments;
- Performing creative procedural design and synthesis of blast layouts and support systems to control and
influence different blasting design processes;
- Understanding the greater picture in the total blasting process and the overall evaluation thereof and
- Communicating, explaining and discussing the reasoning, methodology, results and ramifications of all the
above aspects in a professional manner at all levels.

Course Content:
Topics covered in the course include:
- The impact of fragmentation on the mining cycle
- Specialised blasting practices
- Environmental friendly blasting
- Assessment of blasting practices
- Downstream effects of blasting results
- Safety in blasting and blasting legislation
