Richard is a thoughtful and compassionate person towards animals. When he goes hunting with his Pa and
brother, Gus, in the woods, he misses shooting a buck. However, he misses shooting it on purpose. He tells Pa
the reason he misses shooting the buck is because he does not like killing animals. Furthermore, he feels that it

Suddenly Richard had an idea. The students in his
school could exchange letters with soldiers overseas.
This would help keep at least a few American men from
feeling so lonely and homesick. It would also be a good
chance for students to learn what life at the front was
like.
Richard's essay flowed from his pencil. Now he really
wanted to win the contest and not just to play the
Doughboy, but because he hoped the school would try
out his idea.

He looked far and near. He did not see another human being

with sobs. He had not cried since he was four, when he had fallen

verses began to well up in his heart like tears. Before long, Richard's
weeping ebbed away. He climbed down from the tree, walked the rest
of the way home, and went up to his room. He took out pencil and
paper and wrote down the title of his poem: "In Memory of Sergeant
Joyce Kilmer". Then, with a calmness that surprised him, he set down
his lines. (page 120 – 121)
