was recently dedicated and is now open
for hunting. The land sits on the banks of
the Mississippi River and is located min-

Anoka, Minn.
“Federal Premium has been one of the

those years. The City of Anoka is proud
to have Federal Premium Ammunition as
an integral part and valued member of our
community,” said Anoka Mayor Phil Rice,
at the dedication ceremony.
The City of Anoka officially dedicat-

Council amended the ordinance to allow
bowhunting and waterfowl hunting within
the city limits.
“For a company like ours, there is no
higher honor than naming a public hunting

he poor economy can change the buying habits of gun
shop customers, sometimes in unexpected ways.
Yes, four years of the Obama presidency has seen the
firearms industry flourish as a bright spot in an otherwise grim
economy. The general public — fearing the loss of the right to
own certain firearms, or the right entirely — found money to pur-
chase firearms and ammunition.
But the long recession has had a separate effect on firearm
purchasing trends. In last month’s column, I mentioned a long-
standing family gun shop in West Virginia. It had a long history
of selling top-quality hunting rifles and sporting shotguns as its
bread-and-butter product. However, today the shop deals with a
public that primarily wants to buy AR rifles and polymer-framed,
self-defense pistols.
This month, we visit shops on opposite sides of the country
to get their take on changing customer tastes in the current eco-
nomic times. Steve Morgan, of Bill’s Gun Rack, shows an example of their fast-
selling used revolvers, a Colt Agent .38.
Used-Gun Option
At Bill’s Gun Rack in Kernersville, N.C., Steve Morgan says to operate, these guns appeal to first-time gun buyers in particular.
the local economy is down so far that local job fairs overflow Despite the economy, the shop also does a brisk business in
with attendees. Bill’s Gun Rack is located near a pawn shop, and new revolvers of the same type.
Morgan says every day, he and the rest of the gun shop staff see “The J-frame Smith & Wessons are consistently very popu-

Grimmer Concerns
W hen government reports tell us that
crime is down nationwide, practi-
cal Americans raise a skeptical eyebrow.
They’ve seen that in “handgun-free Chi-
cago,” shootings by criminals take place
at the rate of almost four dozen per week,
and flash mob assaults have become the
current local crime trend. Logic tells
Americans that when money is tight, more
desperate people will turn to crime.

he Range at Lake Norman in North Carolina is the first
range in the state to receive the Five Star designation from
NSSF. To make the honor even more distinctive, the facil-
ity earned its Five Star status in its first full year of operation —
faster than any other Five Star range currently holding the title.
“It is an honor to be recognized as a top range,” said Tricia
Sisson, co-owner and CEO of The Range at Lake Norman. “We
have a highly trained, dedicated staff and a clean, inviting facility.
Our customers continuously tell us the range is beautiful, and our
people are the friendliest, most helpful in the industry. We are so
pleased the NSSF has recognized the effort our staff puts into the
day-to-day operation of the range, the newest and most techno-
logically advanced facility in the Charlotte region.”
Trish Stukbauer, co-owner, touted the range’s emphasis on
serving the customer.

uilding your customer base means reaching out to new
shooters and retaining established gun enthusiasts. Women
tend to become more active in the shooting sports if other
women support them. They are also more likely to be lifelong
shooters if they have a fun, social group of women to shoot with.
A new organization called “A Girl & A Gun” is branching out
across the nation, increasing the number of women shooters —
and dealers who support the group are seeing their businesses
grow.
A Girl & A Gun (AG & AG) is a women’s shooting league
established by women shooters for women shooters. The events
are fun, social gatherings where women have a chance to ask
questions of other women shooters, improve their shooting skills
and create a bond in the shooting community. It is not a formal
shooting class, but AG & AG does provide the basics of safe gun
handling and range etiquette. NRA-certified instructors and/or
range safety officers supervise all shooting events.
Established in Texas in 2011 by Juliana Crowder, AG & AG
has expanded to Colorado, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Alabama,
Georgia and Virginia, and now boasts more than 715 members. The Arms Room in League City, Texas,

A Place to Shoot in San Antonio, Texas,
also has an active AG & AG chapter.
“It’s building our customer base of
women,” said Kyle Odom, manager at A
Place to Shoot.
The majority of women who come to A
Place to Shoot are looking for a defensive
weapon, Odom noted, and many of them
are one-time purchasers. If they have an
interest in shooting, Odom said he always
refers them to AG & AG because they
then tend to become repeat customers.
“AG & AG has a big impact on build-
ing a shooter,” he said. “I’d rather see
shooters than gun owners.”
AG & AG participation helps women
move into the recreational side of gun
ownership and gives them varied experi-
ences with guns.
“I view [AG & AG] as a resource.
They cover all areas of interest and re-
ally take women under their wing,” Odom
said. “The women also have a great time.

ndependent gun dealers are the innovators of the shooting industry, as well as
its backbone. They have the ability to swiftly identify trends in their market,
and move quickly to stock products and provide services their customers want.
Election years always create turmoil in the firearms industry, but savvy
dealers are looking beyond 2012, and banking on quality prod-
ucts and excellent customer service to create success in
2013. Gun dealers are re-branding themselves and
marketing their businesses as part of the enter-
tainment industry. They’re capturing that
elusive discretionary dollar by providing
products and services that serve a prac-
tical purpose, but are also a heck of a
lot of fun.
Success in the coming year also
depends heavily on how dealers
market their businesses. The Inter-
net and social media cannot be ig-
nored. People in their 20s and 30s
exclusively use their smartphones
and computers to gather and share
information. In order to capture
this group of influential customers,
an attractive and informative website
with a Facebook link is a must, along
with connecting through blogs, Twitter,
YouTube and other high-tech tools.
Here’s a look at the strategies successful
dealers are putting in place to keep their
businesses profitable in the coming year.

n today’s very fast-paced world, what hap-
pened yesterday is quickly forgotten. The
2012 Summer Olympic Games is no different.
While millions watched the Olympics on televi-
sion, much of what happened in London is no lon-
ger a topic of conversation, and is certainly out of
the headlines. But for the shooting sports industry,
the London games was a defining moment.
I’m not referring to medals won or records
broken, although those were impressive. I’m re-
ferring to the amount of publicity — exposure
and mass reach the shooting sports received dur-

There are times the industry sees the main-
stream media as an adversary — one we must
