PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Project Management

1. Evaluate the criteria FEL uses to assign managers to project teams. What

efficiencies do these criteria create? What are the resulting problems?

The criteria applied by FEL in assigning managers to the project team is clear. The

assignments are done based on the availability and expertise of the managers to operate on the

project. For instance, if a manager is assigned a project and the project will run up to July 20th

and another project of the similar nature will begin from 22nd same month same year, then the

manager will eventually undertake the new project. In other words, given that a manager is not

occupied with a current project undertaking, the new project will be assigned automatically

(Larson & Gray, 2014).

On matters of efficiency towards the projects, managers gets assigned to the new projects

on basis of their availability and loyalty. No assignments are done based on the work the worker

is performing. With no doubts, there are many challenges experienced as a result of using this

criteria. There are cases where some employees have been inefficient towards the tasks because

they do not want to experience burdens of finishing tasks on time and not before time. Another

problem is that the issue of working conditions is not put into consideration. As seen in the case,

two of the workers have engaged in a clash and there is no top management representative or any

other member from the company comes in to handle and resolve the problem (Imbeah &

Guikema, 2009).

2. Why is it even more important that project team members work well together on

international projects such as Project Abu Dhabi?

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

When working on international projects, project team members are advised to work

together as a team. For instance, working for a project such as Project Abu Dhabi bearing in

mind that FEL is a known brand by many, the team will ensure that their efforts are productive in

marketing the product in foreign regions. Working as team helps the team to make research on

various marketing strategies that benefit their task. Such a move helps them become successful

and penetrate international market (Larson & Gray, 2014). As a result of working as a team and

the company becoming a renowned element, FEL has been able to engage and sign contracts

with other firms like the Project Abu Dhabi.

The organization is facing some challenges from the old employees such as Rankin and

Perry clashing. These two employees feels uncomfortable working together in their assigned

projects because of personal reasons. Such a situation affects and hinders effective operations of

the company. The area in which the top management fails is that they are assuming that the two

personal issue won’t affect or hinder operations of their work (Imbeah & Guikema, 2009). There

is need for a critical workplace training for al project team members that highlights some of

essential aspects. Some of the elements that should be pointed out in the training should include

the professionalism of all employees, setting common goals as a team, understanding the need

for the company projects, and the need for effective and suitable communication for all

employees.

3. Discuss the dilemma that Jobe now faces

There are a number of dilemma situations that Jobe is facing in the current times. As he

interviews the managers (Bruder, Rankin, and Perry), Jobe received some negative feedback

comments from this team about the current project of Abu Dhabi. As seen from the interview,

the team members have a feel that the new project won’t be successful rather it will just be a
PROJECT MANAGEMENT

failure for the company (Larson & Gray, 2014). The misunderstanding between Rankin and

Perry is another dilemma that Jobe faces since the two are effective employees. It is clear that the

two have differences, but Stonebreaker is seen not to mind when the two are put for a common

project.

Jobe is a confused person on matters of team reaction. The members have failed to

support moreover, something that makes Jobe feel stressed on Gatenby expectations about the

project. Gatenby trusts the work of Jobe and expects a successful implementation of the task.

Another stressing issue is that Gatenby expects Jobe to deal and respond to the clash facing

Rankin and Perry without affecting Abu Dhabi project (Larson & Gray, 2014).

4. What should Jobe recommend to Gatenby?

Having hopes and expectations from your employees is not bad as seen in this case. The

problem or the risk is keeping unwanted expectations or expecting more than the employee can

handle. Jobe is known to be a successful person who does things in a professional way, hence he

has managed to implement a number of projects. Because of the negative attitude of most of the

team members and the clash between Perry and Rankin, executing the project in expected

manner might be a problem (Larson & Gray, 2014).

There are recommendations that Jobe should have for Gatenby. Since Gatenby is the

senior manager, he should take the initiative of addressing the top managers and if possible new

project team members should be recruited for the project (Imbeah & Guikema, 2009). A face to

face interaction with the entire team should be made to address the way forward for the Abu

Dhabi project. The current clash between the two employees should be taken serious as it might

affect the operations of the new project.
