PUEBLO REVIVAL, TUCSON, AZ

Tucson is home to nearly 1 million people and has over 7 million visitors
each year. The area was originally home to the Hokam Indians who lived there for
nearly 4000 years. In the 1600s, the Spanish missionaries arrived and began
establishing their territory. Tucson is the oldest city in Arizona and has has customs
related to the deep roots of the Tohono O'odham Indians, Mexicans and early
settlers that were already living there.
Tucson is surrounded by 5 mountain ranges and is near the valleys of the
Sonoran Desert. The average day is sunny and dry making the weather great for
outdoor exploration. The winter temperatures reach a low of 64-76 degrees. The
summers are often hot with low humidity. Due to the area being a desert. The
mornings are cool and evenings the are hot.

Researching Transitional Housing

When prompted to research transitional housing, I had to start at the beginning in order

to put a face to the name. Though familiar with the concept, I hadn’t known the exact term.

Transitional Housing is recognized as the intermediate step between a crisis shelter and

permanent housing. (Homeless Hub, 2014) Commonly, transitional homes may cater to a

specific demographic; focusing on the shelter and protection of women and children without

homes. Transitional homes typically have a longer grace period for them to stay, ranging from 3

months to 3 years. During this time, they provide programs and resources to educate and help

the occupants become self-dependent.

The demand for this housing is substantial, and it is important to recognize their

purpose. Living on the street is never an ideal situation. Not knowing or having the resources to

feed, bath, shelter your child let alone yourself is something of nightmares. Health care and lack

of feminine hygiene products are often over looked. While in some states these products are

given out freely, that is not the case for many especially on the east coast. There are some

groups throughout the US such as Distributing Dignity that provide women things such as pads,

tampons and under garments but for many shelters the supply is severely limited. Transitional
homes help provide these resources for women and teens to be comfortable and remain

hygienic. Lastly, it is important to recognize that in some situations, individuals must utilize

these homes due to past traumas, or unsafe living conditions prior. Transitional homes work as

a haven for them in a sense, and provide them with stability and counseling.

Upon researching the purpose behind transitional housing, I came along Columbia’s very

own haven. The Women’s Shelter has been a part of Columbia, South Carolina’s community for

over 30 years. Beginning in 1976, they sheltered men, women and children. However, when

expanding the began to create a variety of shelters, from domestic abuse, children, family and

now the women’s shelter. Their mission is to provide lasting change throughout their resident’s

life and offer more than a bed. The offer counseling, and programs ranging from prevention

courses, budgeting classes, women’s health and nutritional classes. The also provide several

support groups such as AA and NA. The Women’s Shelter currently owns 17 furnished housing

units that offer up to two-year long-term housing for women who have successfully completed

their 12-week housing programs. They also help assist residents with gaining home ownerships

and mortgage payments. Alongside of private dwellings, they provided a large meeting space,

private counseling rooms and a resource center. Ultimately their main priority is to bring

positive social change and help people who have fell short in a faulty system.

CONCEPT STATEMENT
The design for this project will provide a safe and
welcoming atmosphere in order to serve as a safe
haven for women and children in need of a long
term shelter. The spaces will include a directors
office, a community space, public facilities and 4
ADA compliant apartments that in order to fit the
needs of all occupants. The transitional homes will
reflect a Pueblo Revival style. South eastern
textiles, dark stained woods and warm color pellet
will create a comforting aesthetic while diving into
Santa Fe’s captivating history.
COLOR SCHEME 1

Color scheme one was

created utilizing a bright and
modern take on Pueblo
Revival style. It utilizes
vibrant, contemporary tones
that demonstrates a lively
feel of Santa Fe. This scheme
would work well with more
neutral, light tones in order to
add interest and ‘pop’ in the
space.
COLOR SCHEME 2

Color scheme two was

traditional representation of
the Pueblo Revival style.

Residential Design II

Final Project

12/22/17

Justification

The strongest elements of design found within the Pueblo Revival transitional home are

color and texture. Materials utilized such as leather, terracotta and wood reflect the

traditional features within the design style. Warm undertones recognized in these

materials also reflect the historical concepts, while still contrasting with the lighter wall

selections to create a contemporary atmosphere. Balance is emphasized within the design

through cohesive furniture selections.

Furniture selections found throughout the Transitional Home reflect the needs of the

diverse resident’s welcome to stay. The top priority is utilizing pieces that would hold up

over time, remain easily manageable, and maximized efficiency. Larger pieces such as

the beds included storage underneath, and dressers are prioritized over unnecessary closet

space within the bedrooms. It is important to practically keep the clients needs in mind,

and often woman and children in need of the transitional homes will get more use out of

storage space vs. relying on having to hang their items.

Lastly, universal code helped make conscious, efficient selections that could be utilized

by everyone. By keeping up with code you are ultimately creating a safe space for all

who may need it, not just an aesthetically pleasing one.

Reflection

Residential design has always been one of my favorite parts of this industry. Having the

opportunity to work one on one with a client, learning about their needs and providing them with

a safe, welcoming space is an awesome thing to be a part of. I really enjoyed the concept of

designing a transitional home. It’s an assignment where you really do have to sit down and focus

on what a client needs may be in a situation where they must utilize a home, while also thinking

of that on a diverse scale. Selections made really must come together not only to last a long time,

but also create a calming environment.

I think what I really took away from this course would come from the critiques and input of

others. Going through the online courses it can be easy to get caught up in focusing on a due date

vs the actual work you are putting out, but having your peers and a supportive educator

recognizing your strengths and weaknesses in a design helps a lot in the long run. This career

path is all about the creative process and having the ability to work in a group environment is

crucial for that.
