Nakamoto. As of September 2015, there were over 14.6 million bitcoins in
circulation with a total market value of $3.4 billion. Bitcoin's success has spawned
a number of competing cryptocurrencies, such as Litecoin, Namecoin and PPCoin.
BENEFITS AND DISADVANTAGE OF CRYPTOCURRENCY

Cryptocurrencies make it easier to transfer funds between two parties in a
transaction; these transfers are facilitated through the use of public and private
keys for security purposes. These fund transfers are done with minimal processing

fees, allowing users to avoid the steep fees charged by most banks and financial
institutions for wire transfers.
Central to the genius of Bitcoin is the block chain it uses to store an online ledger
of all the transactions that have ever been conducted using bitcoins, providing a
data structure for this ledger that is exposed to a limited threat from hackers and
can be copied across all computers running Bitcoin software. Many experts see
this block chain as having important uses in technologies, such as online voting
and crowdfunding, and major financial institutions such as JP Morgan Chase see
potential in cryptocurrencies to lower transaction costs by making payment
processing more efficient.
However, because cryptocurrencies are virtual and do not have a central

repository, a digital cryptocurrency balance can be wiped out by a computer crash
if a backup copy of the holdings does not exist. Since prices are based on supply
and demand, the rate at which a cryptocurrency can be exchanged for another
currency can fluctuate widely.
Cryptocurrencies are not immune to the threat of hacking. In Bitcoin's short

history, the company has been subject to over 40 thefts, including a few that
exceeded $1 million in value. Still, many observers look at cryptocurrencies as
hope that a currency can exist that preserves value, facilitates exchange, is more
transportable than hard metals, and is outside the influence of central banks and
governments.

WHAT IS BTC
BTC which is an abbreviation of bitcoin is is a worldwide cryptocurrency and a

digital payment system. It was invented by an unknown programmer or a group
of programmer with the name Satoshi Nakamoto. It was created in 2009. Bitcoin
offers the promise of lower transaction fees than traditional online payment
mechanisms and is operated by a decentralized authority, unlike government-
issued currencies. Today's market cap for all bitcoin (abbreviated BTC or, less
frequently, XBT) in circulation exceeds $7 billion.
There are no physical bitcoins, only balances kept on a public ledger in the cloud,
that – along with all Bitcoin transactions – is verified by a massive amount of
computing power. Bitcoins are not issued or backed by any banks or
governments, nor are individual bitcoins valuable as a commodity. Despite its not
being legal tender, Bitcoin charts high on popularity, and has triggered the launch
of other virtual currencies collectively referred to as Altcoins.

The system is peer-to-peer, and transactions take place between users directly,
without an intermediary. These transactions are verified by network nodes and
recorded in a public distributed ledger called a blockchain. Since the system works
without a central repository or single administrator, bitcoin is called the first
decentralized digital currency.
Besides being created as a reward for mining, bitcoin can be exchanged for other
currencies, products, and services in legal or black markets.
BACKGROUND OF BTC
In Aug. 18, 2008 the domain name bitcoin.org is registered. Today, at least, this
domain is "WhoisGuard Protected," meaning the identity of the person who
registered it is not public information. In Oct. 31, 2008 someone using the name
Satoshi Nakamoto makes an announcement on The Cryptography Mailing list at
metzdowd.com: "I've been working on a new electronic cash system that's fully
peer-to-peer, with no trusted third party. In Jan. 3, 2009 the first Bitcoin block is
mined, Block 0. This is also known as the "genesis block" and contains the text:
"The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks,"
perhaps as proof that the block was mined on or after that date, and perhaps also
as relevant political commentary. In Jan. 8, 2009 the first version of
the Bitcoin software is announced on The Cryptography Mailing list. In Jan. 9,
2009: Block 1 is mined, and Bitcoin mining commences in earnest.

One of the first supporters, adopters, contributor to bitcoin and receiver of the
first bitcoin transaction was programmer Hal Finney. Finney downloaded the
bitcoin software the day it was released, and received 10 bitcoins from Nakamoto
in the world's first bitcoin transaction. Other early supporters were Wei Dai,
creator of bitcoin predecessor b-money, and Nick Szabo, creator of bitcoin
predecessor bit gold.
In the early days, Nakamoto is estimated to have mined 1 million bitcoins. Before
disappearing from any involvement in bitcoin, Nakamoto in a sense handed over
the reins to developer Gavin Andresen, who then became the bitcoin lead
developer at the Bitcoin Foundation, the 'anarchic' bitcoin community's closest
thing to an official public face.
HOW SUCCESSFUL
As of February 2015, over 100,000 merchants and vendors accepted bitcoin as

payment. According to research produced by Cambridge University in 2017, there
are 2.9 to 5.8 million unique users using a cryptocurrency wallet, most of them
using bitcoin.
Instead of 2–3% typically imposed by credit card processors, merchants accepting

bitcoins often pay fees in the range from 0% to less than 2%. Firms that accepted
payments in bitcoin as of December 2014 included PayPal,
Microsoft, Dell,and Newegg.
The value of the first bitcoin transactions were negotiated by individuals on

the bitcoin talk forums with one notable transaction of 10,000 BTC used to
indirectly purchase two pizzas delivered by Papa John's.
