Lesson Plan: Reindeer Games

Grade Level: 1
Month: December
Content Area/Subject: Physical Education
Topic/Theme: Christmas

Brain Based Activities, Techniques, Strategies:

Orchestrated Immersion – Learning environments are created that immerse students in a learning
experiences.
Gross Motor Integration – Learning engages the whole body. All learning is mind-body: movement,
foods, attention cycles, and chemicals help drive and modulate learning.

Domain and Level:

Psychomotor – Idea 1 – PE.1.M.1.13 – Chase, flee and dodge to avoid or catch others.

Objectives for the Domain:

Students will be able to –
1. Identify personal space.
2. Understand the rules of each activity.
3. Chase, flee and dodge to avoid or catch others.

Introduction (Set Induction):

Divide the students into groups that will rotate between activities. Students will be put into groups by
having the instructor pass out ribbons to the students with a different Christmas character on them
which will divide the students into 2 different groups.

Procedure:
1. Activity 1 – Reindeer Tag –One group of students will be elves and the other group will be
reindeer. Reindeer will wear football flags around their waist. Reindeer will avoid getting an
“antler” (their flag) taken by an elf. Elves will attempt to pull “antlers” (flags) from the reindeer.
Once a reindeer gets its antler taken by an elf, the elf will give the antler back, the reindeer will
hold it above their head and go out of bounds to bounce a ball off a wall and catch it 20 times.
After the reindeer completes this activity they can go back into reindeer tag. Instructor will
blow whistle when it’s time to switch roles. Students in play must stay in bounds at all times.
2. Activity 2 – Reindeer Roundup – Students will separate into their 2 groups. One group will be
reindeer and the other group will be elves. All students will sit on a rolling scooter to maneuver
around the gym. Elves will have a hula hoop. Reindeers will avoid being caught in a hula hoop
by an elf. Elves will catch reindeer in the hula hoop. Once a reindeer is caught, they will go to
the side out of bounds of the game and hula hoop for 2 minutes and then return to the game.
Instructor will blow whistle when it’s time to switch roles. Students in play must stay in bounds.

Materials:
Group ribbons, football tag flags, flat scooters, hula hoops, balls

Evaluations:
Observe the student’s participation during activities.

Assessment:
Observe how well each student is doing at following directions and participating in each activity.

Access Point:
Cognitive complexity – level 2 – understanding: Constructing meaning from different types of functions
be they written or graphic messages, or activities like interpreting, exemplifying, classifying,
summarizing, inferring, comparing, or explaining.
Psychomotor complexity – Level 3 – perceptual abilities: Objectives in this area should address skills
related to kinesthetic (bodily movements), visual, auditory, tactile (touch), or coordination abilities as
they are related to the ability to take in information from the environment and react.
Psychomotor complexity – Level 4 – physical abilities – Objectives in this area should address skills
related to kinesthetic (bodily movements), visual, auditory, tactile (touch), or coordination abilities as
they are related to the ability to take in information from the environment and react.

Accommodations:
If a student has physical challenges, fine or gross motor, show them other ways that they can participate
in the activity by performing simpler movements. Accept and encourage whatever movements the
student is able to perform.
