LEVEL OF OPENNESS 2

CATEGORY TRADITIONAL

DEGREE OF OPEN-ENDED (%) 66

PERIOD OF ACTIVITY 1 WEEK

TITLE SPOT SPEED STUDY

1.1 Introduction
The speed of traffic can be measured in three distinctive ways. It can be
measured at one particular point on a highway (spot speed), between
two discrete points along a highway (space mean speed) or between the
start and finishing point of a journey (journey speed).
Spot speed or time mean speed can be used to measure the average
speed of vehicles passing a point over a specified time period.
The students required to follow the guideline of level 0 in Open Ended
Laboratory.

1.2 Objectives
The objectives of the study are is:
I. To measure the average speed of vehicles passing a point over a
specified period in selected highway.
PREAMBLE
II. To analyze the trend of speed of vehicle at the particular study
area.

1.3 Learning Outcomes

At the end of the laboratory activities, students would be able to:
1. Identify the right tools to carry out the appropriate spot speed study.
2. Analyze the collected speed data
3. Work in a group to undertake the task and produce the relevant
technical report.

1.4 Theoretical Background

In this laboratory activities, The device (radar speed meter) operates on a
Doppler principle that the speed of a moving target is proportional to the
change in frequency between the radio beam transmitted to the target and the
reflected radio beam. The equipment measures this difference and converts it
to direct reading in miles per hour. The accuracy of speed determination is 2

miles per hour up to 100 miles per hour.

2 Problem Statement

Students will be given apparatus for this laboratory and test will be conducted
at specific location. Students are required to collect all the data at the location.
All the data need to be tabulated in table.
Graphical representation of speed data:
1. Frequency Histogram
2. Frequency Distribution Curve
3. Cumulative Frequency Curve
4. 15 percentile speed
5. 50 percentile speed
PROBLEM STATEMENT 6. 85 percentile speed
7. 95 percentile speed
Data Analysis and Interpretation
Statistically analysis:
1. Arithmetic mean speed
2. Median speed
3. Design speed
4. Speed limit
5. Modal speed
6. Standard deviation

3.1 Apparatus
The group must identify the availability of the chosen apparatus in the lab

3.2 Procedures
The group is required to search for the relevant procedure to carry out the test
based on the available apparatus in your laboratory. The document must be
made ready for verification by the instructor during the laboratory activity.

3.3 Data Acquisition

All data collected and observed during the test must be tabulate in proper
format for easy verification and presentation of the technical report

4 Results, Analysis and Conclusion

The group is required to submit the technical report of the laboratory results
highlighting the apparatus used, the procedures undertaken for the test, data
RESULTS acquisition process, analysis carried out and the relevancy of the set-out
output to address the given problem. The format of the technical report is left
to the creativity discretion of the group.
The report must be submitted 7 days after the laboratory date.
