Door Step School

I It’s a known fact – students around the world hate getting up on Monday mornings for school
and most complain about homework and tests. However, for many thousands of young people
in India, going to school isn’t always an option. Despite the law that requires providing free
education for children from ages 6 -14 and another law banning child labour, thousands of
young people in India have to work to support their families. Sadly, many don’t realise the
importance of obtaining an education, and for many of those who wish to study, there isn’t
always a school in their area.

II To help these young people, an organisation called Door Step School brings the school to the
students rather than bringing the students to the school. Six days a week, four Schools on
Wheels buses are sent out to impoverished neighbourhoods in the cities of Mumbai and Pune.
These buses make up to six stops a day. Two teachers onboard set up an informal classroom
at each stop. The “classroom” is very simple – often, there is just a small carpet and a
blackboard. Despite these basic conditions, students are given the opportunity to study
English, maths, science, art, music and their own language, Hindi.

III Door Step School offers the students more than just academic subjects. They learn how to
concentrate and work together. They are encouraged to stop begging and stealing, and are
shown that there is a better future which exists beyond their impoverished environment. The
programme also arranges a daily visit to the schools from a “shower bus”, to encourage
personal hygiene, and an ambulance visits weekly to monitor the students’ health. In addition,
students receive a free, nutritious meal every day after the lesson. The programme aims to
educate students academically and socially so that they can later attend ordinary government
schools. During the project’s first seven years, 160 students have achieved this goal.

IV Door Step School doesn’t offer its students modern, comfortable classrooms. However, it does
manage to get the job done and offer the possibility of a better future to thousands of young
people. For these students, Monday mornings are definitely worth looking forward to.
