Light Sources
Anything that produces its own light is called a light source. Some
are natural and some are manmade. Can you classify the following
light sources as natural or manmade?
Natural Manmade
Bioluminescence - is a biochemical
process where an animal creates
light but no heat. This light is used
for communication, camouflage, or
attracting a mate or prey. This is
a picture of a bioluminescent fish!

Light Through Objects
When light shines on an object, one of three things can happen:
1. If light passes through, the object is transparent.
2. If light is blurred, the object is translucent.
3. If light is blocked, the object is opaque.
TRY THIS!
Try shining a flashlight through plastic wrap, wax paper and tin foil.
Fill in the sentences below to show what you observed.

Light & Shadow
Shadows occur when an object
blocks a light source from reach-
ing a certain area. Shadows are
darker, but there is always some
light that reaches them. We can
still see the color of something that
is shadowed, even if that color is
very dark.
If a light source is lower, the shadow will be longer. Draw an object in the
space below. Then color the ground and the shadow that it will cast.
On a separate piece of paper, paint a scene that has a light source and
an object that casts a shadow.

Neil Armstrong
Neil Armstrong was born on August 5th, 1930 in Ohio. Armstrong
developed an interest in flying at an early age. His love of airplanes
grew when he went for his first plane ride in a Ford Tri-Motor, a "Tin
Goose," at the age of 6. From then on, he was fascinated by aviation.
Armstrong was a civilian test pilot assigned to test the X-15 rocket
airplane before becoming an astronaut in 1962. He made his first space
flight in 1966 on Gemini 8 with David R. Scott. On July 20, 1969
Armstrong was the first person to set foot on the moon. Along with Buzz
Aldrin, he landed the Apollo 11 lunar module Eagle on the moon. Upon
taking his first steps he said, Thats one small step for a man, one giant
leap for mankind. Armstrong is most famous for being the first person
to walk on the moon.

THE SOLAR SYSTEM
The solar system is the Sun and the objects that travel around it. The Sun is a star similar to
the other stars in the sky but it is much closer to the Earth. The Sun is mostly a big ball of gases
composed mainly of hydrogen and helium.
There are eight planets that travel around the sun. These planets, in order,
include Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. The planet Earth
takes 365 days or one year to orbit the Sun.
The planets of the solar system are also a variety of sizes and are made up of different
substances. The largest planet in the solar system is Jupiter. Over 1,000 Earths could fill the size
of Jupiter. The smallest planet is Mercury, which is also the closest planet to the Sun. Earth
and Venus are similar in size to each other.
2) What is the difference between the Sun and the other stars of the universe?
A: The sun is much farther away
B: The sun shines brighter
C: The sun is closer to the Earth
D: The sun is much larger
3) Which of the following shows the correct order of the inner planets?
A: Mercury, Earth, Venus, Mars
B: Mars, Mercury, Venus, Earth
C: Venus, Mars, Erath, Mercury
D: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars
5) Which of the following shows the smallest and largest planets of the solar system?
A: Mercury and Saturn
B: Venus and Earth
C: Mercury and Jupiter
D: Saturn and Jupiter
