Preschool Foundation or Common Core Standard to be addressed:

Preschool Foundation Volume 1 in the area of Number Sense
1.5 use the number of the last object counted to answer the question, How many ?

Title of Lesson:
Block Play and Block Counting

Background Information:
This activity would be best implemented during a small group free choice time.
After circle time the children will choose their area of interest.
2 to 3 children at a time would be idea for this small group activity.

Objective:
After participating in this activity the children should be able to answer the question,
how many blocks? they counted. This activity is designed to be fun and engaging.
The children first need to be engaged with the blocks, then scaffolding will take place.
After the child shows interest in the activity and is engaged. Communication and
language development will be redefined during this process. After engaged in play for a
couple minutes the teacher will ask the child to answer the question, how many?
This will be secondary on the priority list.
We first want the children to be active and engaged in the block play, and the teacher
will build on the interest of the children

Materials:
I would need a table
3 children chairs
1 teacher chair
Blocks (different colors, size, and shapes)
I would first let the children be engaged with the blocks and slow to warm
introduce math concepts of counting.
Procedure:
Review:
Circle time (counting theme, introduce block activity)
Dismiss the children one by one
Free choice time small group activities and areas in the classroom that are open
during this time
Block activity
Scaffold communication and language development
After child is engaged ask the question, How many?

Overview:
I would use my words and communication to motivate the children during this activity
Presentation - I would first start by having circle time.
The theme of circle time would tie into this activity.
The opening song will the Number Rock song to start math concept awareness
and get counting started in a fun and engaging way.
One more song during circle time (Teachers choice)
Calendar review and number counting to the current day
Then the book during circle time would be Chicka, Chicka, 1, 2, 3 by Bill Martin,
Jr. and Michael Sampson.
After questions and comments, tell the children what areas are open during free
choice time and introduce the block activity and the other activities during this
time.
I would tell the children that we have a small group activity with blocks.
Ask the children what can we do with blocks?
Dismiss the children from circle time to free choice time
Let the children explore with the blocks and during exploration ask open ended
question to keep interest during the activity.
Line up about 4 to 5 block
Then ask the one child at a time to count the blocks
Then ask the question after counting the block how many blocks?
Discussion Questions:
Who can count up these blocks?
What shape is this block?
What colors are the different blocks?
How many blocks did you count?
Can you count backwards?
Evidence of Learning:
Learning will take place if the child engages in the activity. Different areas of
development will be addressed during this activity.
I would know if a child met this standard if a child was able to answer the how many?
question correctly consecutively 3 times.

Next Steps:
If the student meets the standard the next step would be to have the children
count backwards?
If the students did not show evidence of meeting the objective continue counting
and continue math concepts that are fun and engaging.
