SECTION 1 - FORWARD
1. INTRODUCTION

The preparation of this document has been prompted by the urgent need to prepare material schedules for use
in districts where detailed estimates prepared shouled accompanied by a schedule of materials. It is hoped that
the workload of I.O.W.'s and Engineers will be substantially lessened.

2. ABBREVIATIONS
Throughout this document terms and units of measurement have been abbreviated and they shall be
interpreted as follows:-

CM shall mean Cubic metres

SM " Square metres
LM " Linear metres
NO " Number
MM " Millimetre
KG " Kilogramme
CF " Cubic feet
SF " Square feet
LF " Linear
e feet
ee

3. FACTORS
It will be noticed that certain facors have been applied to quantities obtained to counteract the effects of
wastes etc. However, deviations from these constants could be realised depending on the level of supervision
and expertise of the tradesmen. It is believed that the factors applied could be lowered with greater
supervision etc.on the part of I.O.W.'s and/or Overseas.

4. PAINTS DATA
With regard to paints, manufacturers data was relied on heavily since to date no no feed back in respect of this
material has been received from the district. District officers concered are therefore resquested to keep
detailed records on the coverage of paints etc. so that this document could be revised in a manner consistent
with Railway standards.

5. GENERALLY
Further it should be noted that only a few material items have been included in this document.

SPECIAL NOTES ON EARTHWORKS

1.) Considering the nature of earthworks, the figure given should be for guidance only.As for hardcore
filling, the quantities given assume at least 96 % compaction

2.)With regard to insecticides treatment and damp proofing, the coverage should depend on site conditions
(for laps and rate of application)

4 FORMULAE USED
a In addition to the usual ratio formulae (see below) of working out the quantities,a factor of 1.33(+33%) was
applied to account for the effect of bulking and waste with the exception of ballast where 10% is added for
waste only.
5
b. x/(x + y+z)* V * 1.33 *1440/50 = n bags of Cement.

y/(x + y+z)* V * 1.33 *1600/1000 = n tons of Sand.

x/(x + y+z)* V * 1.33 *1473/1000 = n tons of Ballast.

Where x, y , z denotes the ratio of mix cement/sand.aggregates in concrete.
