SCOPE OF SPECIFICATIONS

1.1. This specification governs the excavation and preparation of pipe trenches for the installation of
underground pipes, culverts and casing pipes, as well as backfilling and compacting of trenches after
completed pipe installation.

2. CODES AND STANDARDS

2.1. Excavations, trenching, shoring and all work directly or indirectly affected by it shall be carried out in
conformity with the following regulations:

Canada: Canadian Occupational Safety and Health Laws (Work is governed by different laws or acts in
every province and covers work under Federal jurisdiction as well).

U.S.A.: O.S.H.A. Safety and Health Regulations for Construction (Code of Federal Regulations, Title 29,
Chapter XVII, Part 1926, Subpart P)

2.2. The installation of cast iron or ductile iron water mains shall conform to the American Water Works
Association Standard AWWA C600.

2.3. Underground pipe anchors shall conform to Standard 4S-30.02.

3. SUPPLEMENTARY DETAILS SPECIFIED ON DRAWINGS

3.1. Location of protective casings.

3.2. Protective casing material and pipe supports.

3.3. Special anchors for pipes.

4. EXCAVATION AND PREPARATION OF THE TRENCH

4.1. Trench excavations shall have a straight line finish between pipe joints or batter boards.

Local excavation is required to accommodate pipe bells and couplings.

4.2. Trench shoring and draining shall be provided whenever ground conditions, safety regulations or work
schedules make this necessary.

4.3. Wherever the existing ground elevation is below the horizontal centerline elevation of the pipe, the grade
shall be brought up to the horizontal centerline elevation, compacted and re-excavated to suit the pipe
installation.

5. INSTALLATION

5.1. Pipe and fittings shall be clean inside when lowered into trenches; open ends shall be plugged when work
is stopped to prevent stones and other foreign material from entering.

5.2. Pipes with outside protective coatings shall be handled with stout, wide belt slings, and wide padded skids
designed to prevent damage to the coating.

5.3. Temporary supports and sills shall not be used to install pipes.

5.4. Pipes shall be supported continuously throughout their length on the lower quadrant, except at bells or
couplings.

6. BEDDING AND BACKFILL

6.1. Bedding and backfill material to 12" above the top of the pipe shall be granular material free of organic
matter and shall be placed in 6" lifts, and compacted to a minimum density equal to 95% of the maximum
dry density at the optimum moisture content as established by standard test methods for moisture-density
relations of soil in accordance with the latest revisions of AASHTO Designation T99, or ASTM
Designation D698.

6.2. Backfill for the remainder of the trench shall be excavated material placed in 12" lifts and containing no
rocks greater than 6" compacted as follows: at road or rail crossings the entire trench shall be
compacted as described in 6.1. In all other areas the compaction of the trench backfill shall have a
density of 90 - 95%.

6.3. Where unsuitable material or a soft sub-grade is encountered at the bottom of the trench, it shall be
excavated and replaced with granular material and compacted as described in 6.1.

6.4. Backfill shall be compacted around the pipe to prevent settlement or lateral movement, and shall contain
no ashes, cinders, or other corrosive material.

6.5. Backfill shall be compacted to the final grade elevation in such a manner as to prevent damage to outside
pipe coatings. Rodding with metal rods will not be permitted.

6.6. Backfilling shall not be done in freezing weather unless written approval is given by the Engineer. The
backfill shall not consist of frozen material and shall not be placed on frozen material already in the
trench.

6.7. Pipes shall be backfilled between joints before testing. The joints however shall not be backfilled until
testing is complete and test results have been accepted.

7. TESTING

7.1. Pipes shall be tested in accordance with the requirements listed on the material classification sheets
and/or the Piping Line Nomenclature sheet.

8. FLUSHING AND BLOWING

8.1. All pipes and connections to the pipes shall be flushed with clean water to remove possible sediment or
foreign material before connecting to piping inside buildings.

8.2. Where flushing with water cannot be tolerated due to the intended service, the pipe shall be free of oil and
blown clean with either compressed air or inert gas such as nitrogen, or other suitable gas acceptable to
the authority having jurisdiction.
