The very highlight of the movie is Al Gores negotiations with India at the Paris Conference
due to their economic objections to carbon-emissions regulations. India serves as the antagonist. In
the movie, we could see Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his speech at the Paris Climate
Conference insist on continuing with conventional energy so as not to put up barriers in the path of
development. More so, one of Indias environmental ministers lectures Al Gore that his country has
the same right as the United States to cheap, oil-spurred industrialization. So in order to secure the
Indian governments consent to the agreement, Al Gore asks Solar City to donate their newest solar
panel. In fact it also appeared that he secured interest-free loans for their renewable development.
Eventually, Al Gore has brokered a deal with India that helped save the Paris Climate accord with
India changing its stance and throwing its weight behind the Paris Agreement. From using coal to
solar power to meet its energy needs.
Al Gore has played a major global role in raising awareness of the dangers of climate change.
He has been optimistic about solving the problem of climate change because of the enormous
increase in renewable energy technology and generation capacity. Many countries are now moving
away from a fossil fuel-dependent economy. The cost of mature renewable technologies is dropping
and become much cheaper far more rapidly. More over battery market is booming which will
address the problems of storing the intermittent power that wind and solar produces. In his movie
he stressed that the battle to halt climate change can be won because the green revolution
delivering clean energy is both bigger than the industrial revolution and happening faster than the
digital revolution. He continuously pushes for sustainability revolution by placing it in the context of
other great global transformations. In his presentations he had hard evidence that solar power
which has been long considered as too expensive to generate on a large scale is finally in a position
to compete with and even beat the convention fuel sources like coal, oil and gas. Al Gores optimism
can be manifested by the fact that despite a lot of people in denial or in opposition with his view, he
continued to train a lot of people around the world to spread the world about climate change.
3) WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE ROLE OF THE LEGAL PROFESSION IN ADDRESSING CLIMATE
CHANGE?
The role of legal profession in addressing climate change is by having the problem of climate
change emotionally not just intellectually. At first the legal profession could lobby policies to the law
makers that would address climate change such as regulations in the use of fossil fuels if not for its
total eradication. After-all, they know and have studied the law. They could also start having
dialogue with these companies or when severe opposition comes they could have alternative
dispute resolution as mechanism instead of filing a suit indiscriminately. They could also be involved
in the design and negotiations of legally binding climate agreements. They could also provide
assistance to those people who are aggrieved by the adverse impacts brought by these companies
who destroy the environment by way of handling their cases pro bono. Indisputably, when
everything else fails, they could always resort to the courts to sue these companies who are
noncompliant with the regulations set by law. I am of the hope that the courts could be a robust tool
for fighting climate change. They can ask for damages or indemnification for the prejudice that they
have cause to the environment and in turn these damages that will be awarded will be given to the
Government for its use in making programs for the sustainability of the usage of renewable
resources.
