Introduction - Today we are going to be learning about something brand new, water tension! Can anyone tell
(5 mins) me anything they know or think they may know about water tension is or why it happens?
Learning Activity Title Review, New material and Video
- Teacher Actions
o Teacher will pull up PowerPoint presentation and introduce the concept of water tension very
briefly
o Start review of last class material
o What did we do in yesterdays class?
o Solute? Solvent? Solubility?
o Come to slide with YouTube video link get class to watch video. After the video discuss what
we saw.
Body o What did you like? What did you learn? Now what can you tell me about water
(15 mins) tension?
- Student Actions
o Students will engage in conversation with teacher about concepts and topics introduced and
being reviewed
o Students will respectfully pay attention to the video and listen carefully
- Assessment Evidence
o Student ability to answer teachers questions on new material as well as review questions
- Transition Details
o Now we are going to move onto another experiment. I need everyone to clear their desks and
prepare for a water tension experiment.
Learning Activity Title Water Tension Experiment
- Teacher Actions
o Teacher will move to PowerPoint slide with information regarding the experiment
o Safety
o What is a prediction- observation?
o Teacher will then move to next slide that discusses procedure of the experiment- teacher will
pick students to read certain sentences in order to include them and help them better
understand the expectations of the experiment
o From here the teacher will explain that groups will be in rows- there is not enough eye
droppers for everyone so students will have to take turns
o Remind students to move chairs and desks around in order to sit in groups and all be able to
see/ participate in experiment
o Teacher will call upon weekly helper to hand out worksheet to students
o Teacher will pass out all the materials to the students- napkins, cup of water, eye dropper, coin
o Teacher will allow students to start experiment once all materials are handed out- walk around
Body and monitor participation, conversation, and make sure students are doing predictions and
(35 mins) observations on the worksheet
- Student Actions
o Students will listen to instructions carefully in order to understand procedure of experiment
o Students will participate in experiment and respects teachers rules of the experiment
o Students will show respect towards each other- share materials
- Assessment Evidence
o Students ability to make accurate predictions and verbally explain why water tension works-
formative
o Students ability to respect one another and share materials
- Transition Details
o Okay now I am going to need everyone to clean up so we can do a brief review before we
move on to our next subject. I want my classroom helper to collect all the eye droppers. I need
3 volunteers. Can you 3 please take the water down to the bathroom and pour the water down
the drain. I need everyone else to throw out all the napkins and put your worksheet into your
science duo tang. Once we are done this I need you all to return to your desks for review.

Move to last slide of PowerPoint presentation

Review of what we learnt today
Closure o What is water tension?
(5 mins) o Why does water tension work?
o Did you guys have fun today?
