At least 15 people have lost their lives following the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that hit
Mexico City which then triggered the eruption of a volcano.

The volcano erupted while the earthquake was hitting Mexico City and huge plumes of
smoke could be clearly seen rising up into the sky. On the slopes of the volcano, a church
collapsed while mass was being held and 15 people died according to Puebla Governor
Jose Antonio Gali.

248 people, which included 22 children from a school, died during the earthquake, which
then sparked off the volcanic activity in the Popocatepetl volcano, which then erupted. The
mountain has been very active in the past, and on August 22 there was an eruption
described as significant, which sent out a huge plume into the air up to 4km.

Many photos of the eruption of the volcano began to appear on social media, and they
showed the smoke rising up out of the peak on the 5, 426m mountain. Experts from the
geological news service said that the plume was a mild eruption and then confirmed that
the volcano was now normal. A witness went on Twitter to say that the volcano had sent
out huge amounts of smoke just moments following the earthquake. Another witness said
that they had seen a plume of smoke that was reddish in color that had come from the
crater just after the earthquake had hit the Puebla region.

W Radio Mexico had been the first to report the volcanic eruption, and they said that the
volcano had been put on red alert after the earthquake hit Mexico City. Luis Felipe Puente,
the civil protection coordinator, confirmed that the volcano was, in fact, remaining at
yellow, which was phase two. He dismissed any reports of the elevation of the warning
level saying that they were false.

Many dozens of buildings in Mexico City collapsed during the earthquake, which hit at
about 1om local time and the death toll is thought to rise as rescuers continue their search.
The earthquake hit on the same day that an earthquake of 8 magnitudes hit in 1985, which
killed more than 5,000 people. It came two weeks following the strongest earthquake
which hit the south coast of Mexico, in which 90 people lost their lives.

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, was on Twitter and he gave blessings to
the people in New York and told them that the US would be there for them.
