I. Course Objectives and Materials

Course Description:
CIS 101 Introduction to Personal Computing: (4 units) Using personal computers and
personal productivity software: (1) Windows environment, (2) Word processing, (3)
Spreadsheets, (4) Presentations and (5) Databases. Problem solving using software
packages adopted by the College of Business Administration. This class is Credit/No Credit.

Expected Outcomes:
The purpose of this course is to have each student attain a level of expertise in each of the
applications so that they may use those skills in subsequent courses at Cal Poly Pomona
without the course instructor having to spend time on basic use of the applications.

Course Overview:

There are no lecture sessions for CIS 101. The subject material covered in CIS 101
addresses Windows and the Microsoft Office 365/2016 versions of Word, PowerPoint,
Access, and Excel. All instructional materials are posted online, computer-based learning
materials. There are no classroom lecture sessions; however, the instructor will be
present during the classroom period on study days to address any questions or problems
students have regarding the course materials.

Here is a quick overview to explain how this course will work for the Spring 2017 quarter:

The course consists for three areas: exam days, study days, and projects. Attendance is
optional on study days. You can use the computer equipment in the classroom or any
other computer with Internet access to prepare for the exams and complete your projects.

To receive credit for the course, you must pass all five of the exams with a score of 70%
or greater on each exam, and pass all four of the assigned projects with a score of 70% or
greater on each project. (For example, if you score 100% on four exams and 69% on one
exam, you will not receive credit for the course)

There are no lecture sessions for CIS 101. Students must prepare for the exams and
complete their projects using the SAM application software. This software provides training,
projects, and videos that students work through at their own pace to become proficient with
the five areas that will be tested, namely Microsoft Windows 10, Microsoft Word 2016,
Microsoft PowerPoint 2016, Microsoft Access 2016, and Microsoft Excel 2016.

1
Exams are scheduled approximately every two weeks, as listed in the schedule on the last
page of this syllabus. One topic will be tested on each exam day, so the 1st exam will test
Windows only the 2nd exam will test Microsoft Word 2016 only, the third exam will test
Microsoft PowerPoint 2016 only, the fourth exam will test Microsoft Access 2016 only, and
the fifth exam will test on Microsoft Excel 2016 only.

Exams are given in the classroom only. Students have three chances to pass each exam.
On the exam week for each topic, you will get one chance to pass the exam on Tuesday
and a second chance on Thursday. For example, if you do not pass an exam on your first
attempt, you can attempt it a second time on Thursday of the same week. The final exam
day is a last chance session for students to attempt any exams they previously failed;
therefore, students that pass all five exams during the exam days for each topic do not
have to take any exams on the final exam day.

There are about twice the number of students enrolled in this section as there are seats
available in the classroom. Therefore, students will be assigned to one of two exam groups,
and on exam days, students will begin their exams either during the first hour (8:00 p.m.)
or the second hour (9:00 p.m.) depending on their group assignment.

Students must show Bronco ID cards on exam days, at the completion of the test

Class Materials

Required: Students must purchase CIS101 access codes from the Bronco Bookstore to
utilize the online SAM software to prepare for the examinations, take exams and complete
projects.

Course websites: There are two websites that students will use for this course.

o Blackboard: https://blackboard.cpp.edu
This site contains important information, including the current syllabus, schedule,
announcements by the instructor, links to SAM videos on how to register and setup
your class and a listing of your grades.

SAM: Follow the instructions provided with the SAM access code to register with the
website Click here to get to SAM website Important: You will use the following
institution key for students to register to SAM: T2035965

o Support videos: Getting started

The SAM site contains the training lessons and projects that you will use to prepare for
your exams. You must create a login account to access this site, and use your SAM
access code. Instructions to create this login account are available online. The training
materials will be always available through the end of the quarter.

You can view the system requirements for SAM here. From that website, you can
select system check from the menu to find out if you need to make changes to your

Services for students with disabilities:

The office of Disability Resource Services has been designated as the campus authority to
verify disabilities and to prescribe specific accommodations and services for students with
documented disabilities. Individualized programs are designed that enable students to
compete academically on an equal basis with their non-disabled peers.

DRC Website: http://www.cpp.edu/~drc/DRC-Online-Services.shtml

Let me know if you need to take tests at the DRC.

Student conduct and expectations:

Academic Dishonesty: Any form of academic dishonesty committed by a student will result in
the student receiving a grade of no credit for the course, and the student will be referred to
judicial affairs.

Training: The SAM software provides self-paced, training modules that allow students to learn
and practice the skills required to become proficient on the topics covered in the course exams.
These training modules are excellent materials to help students prepare for the required
exams, and they have been developed to address the specific tasks from which the exams are
based.

Exams: Students must pass five in-class computer-based exams, with one exam addressing
each of the following topics: Windows, Microsoft Word 2016, Microsoft PowerPoint 2016,
Microsoft Excel 2016, and Microsoft Access 2016. Each exam will be administered in the
classroom. Students are required to attend class on exam days, and students must identify
themselves by presenting their Bronco ID cards to the instructor.

Projects: Students must complete four SAM software projects. The schedule presented on the
last page of this syllabus indicates the due dates for these four projects that pertain to Microsoft
Word 2016, Microsoft PowerPoint 2016, Microsoft Excel 2016, and Microsoft Access 2016. For
each of these projects, students will use SAM to download a project file and instructions, then
perform the work on their downloaded project file, and finally submit their completed project
file to SAM for grading.

Videos: The SAM software provides additional self-paced, instructional materials that allow
students to learn and practice the skills required to become proficient on the topics covered in
the course. These materials include a wide variety of instructional videos and written material.
Students seeking additional information will find a wealth of materials available.

Grade Assessment:

This course is graded on a credit/no credit basis. To receive credit for this course, the student
must pass with a score of 70% or higher on each exam and 70% or higher on each project.
Note that students have three attempts to upload projects by the deadline. There are
no makeup opportunities for the projects. There will be no exceptions to this grading policy.
Training lessons and videos are not graded.
