fraction division problems by writing a
multiplication sentence and drawing a
diagram?/ GoMath
Thursday, April 20, 2017 Materials Needed: GoMath workbooks,
math notebooks, SmartBoard, sticky notes

Standards

5.NF.B.7b

Learning Objectives
I can solve fraction division problems by writing a multiplication sentence and drawing a
diagram.

Central Focus
Drawing diagrams to solve fraction division problems.

Academic Language Demands

Students need to know what multiplication and division are, fractions, and greatest
common factor.

Instructional Strategies and Learning Tasks that Support Student Needs

I will ask students to take out their GoMath workbooks and math notebooks. I will be
standing in front of the room and the students will be seated at their desks.
Launch (Motivation) 5 minutes
I will read the teaching point out loud to the class: You will be able to solve
fraction division problems by writing a multiplication sentence and drawing a
diagram. I will write the following problem up on the SmartBoard:
1
3
6
Students should know that if we divide a whole number by a fraction, we would
write the fraction as 6 since we flip the numerator and denominator. I will call on
a student to state their answer and explain how they got it. I will answer any
questions and clarify any misunderstandings at this point.
Instructional Procedure (Explore) 15 minutes
I will explain to the students that we can draw a diagram to help us solve fraction
division problems.
I will write the following problem on the SmartBoard:
Erica makes 6 submarine sandwiches and cuts each sandwich into thirds. How
1
many -size sandwich pieces does she have? I will explain to the students
3
that this is a perfect situation where we can draw a diagram to make solving this
problem much easier. I will draw six rectangles to represent the six sandwiches. I
will then draw two lines in each rectangle to divide each sandwich in thirds. I

will then ask the students how many squares I have all together. I will then have
1
them solve the problem using the equation 6 . I will put the following
3
problem on the SmartBoard:
Roberto is cutting 3 blueberry pies into halves to give to his neighbors. How
1
many neighbors will get of a pie?
2
I will draw three circles to represent the three blueberry pies. I will draw a line
directly down the middle of each circle to show that I have divided each circle in
half. I will ask the students how many pieces I have and that will be how many
neighbors will receive one half of a pie.
Structured Practice and Application 20 minutes
Students will turn to page 499 in their GoMath workbook. I will assign numbers
2-3. Students will work independently while I walk around the room to help
those students who are struggling. After ten minutes, we will review by calling
students to solve the problems on the SmartBoard. For those students who are
finished, I will assign #6 on page 500 to the struggling and on grade level
students, and #8 to the students who are finding the work easy.
Closure 5 minutes
Teacher will reiterate that from now on, whenever they are solving, they can draw
a diagram to help them solve a word problem. Having a visual will make it a lot
easier. I will also pass out sticky notes so students can write down any area they
are having difficulty in.
