Cause Action
Starting Motor Operating But Not Cranking the Remove the starting motor and check for broken
Engine. teeth on the ring gear or broken starting motor
spring.
Starting Circuit Connections Loose or Corroded. Clean and tighten connections.
Battery Charge Low. Check battery voltage, electrolyte & charge if
necessary.
No Voltage to Starter Solenoid. Check the connection & rectify the defects.
Crankshaft Rotation Restricted. Establish the causes and rectify the defects.
Solenoid or Starting Motor Malfunction. Find out the cause rectify the defects or replace
starter motor if required.

Cause Action
No Fuel in Supply tank. Check / replace fuel supply
Electrical or Manual Fuel Shut off Not Open. Check for loose wires and verify that the
valve is functioning Check to be sure manual
shutoff lever is in the run position.
Improper Starting Procedure. Verify proper starting procedure.
Inspect Fuel Transfer Pump Operation. Inspect as per specified procedure & take
necessary action.
Fuel Injection Pump Not Getting Fuel or Fuel is Check for any leakages in the return side of F.
Aerated. I.P. Check for condition of fuel filter, replace if
nescessary. Bleed the fuel system.
Air Intake or Exhaust System Plugged. Check for the restrictions in the Air intake
circuit including the clogged filters and also
the exhaust system including the engine
exhaust brake butterfly valve & clogging of
silencer & take corrective action.
Fuel Drain Back. Verify that the return line is plumbed to the
bottom of the fuel tank.
Malfunctioning Fuel Return Overflow Valve. Check/ replace return overflow valve.
Worn or Malfunctioning Fuel Injection Pump. Get Fuel injection pump checked and
rectified at authorized Fuel Injection Pump
dealer.
Injection Pump Timing Incorrect. Verify the Fuel Injection timing and correct
the same if found incorrect.
Engine Camshaft Out of Time. Check/correct gear train timing alignment.

Cause Action
Starting Procedure Incorrect. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual.
Intake Air Insufficient. Inspect all passages / tubes with air filter assembly,
replace the air filter if required.
Air in the Fuel System or the Fuel Supply Check all the fuel filters of the system. proper
Inadequate. tightening of connections specially of suction side
and also for the puncture of the suction tube etc.
Fuel is Contaminated. Verify by operating the engine with clean fuel from
a temporary tank on No. 2 diesel fuel. Checked the
fuel contaminate properly / completely drain out the
contaminated fuel from the tank and get the entire
fuel system flushed . Use clean uncontaminated
fuel only.
Fuel Drain Back. Verify fuel return line is plumbed to bottom of fuel
tank.
Malfunctioning Fuel Return Overflow Valve. Check/replace return overflow valve.
Fuel Injection Pump Out of Time. Check/adjust inspection pump timing.
Valves Incorrectly Adjusted. Adjust valves.
One or More Injectors Worn or Malfunctioning. Check/replace injectors.
Engine Compression Low. Perform a compression check to identify the
problem.
Fuel Injection Pump /Delivery Valves Remove fuel injection pump. Have calibration
Malfunctioning. checked.

Cause Action
Low Fuel Level. Check/fill fuel tank
Engine Starting Under Load. Disengage driven units.
Idle Speed Too Low for Accessories. Adjust the idle speed.
Intake Air or Exhaust System Restricted. Visually check for exhaust restriction and
inspect the air intake.
Air in the Fuel System or the Fuel Supply is Inadequate. Check the flow through the filter and bleed
the system. Locate and correct the air
source.
Fuel Waxing Due to Extremely Cold Weather. Verify by inspecting the fuel filter. Clean the
system and use climatized fuel.
Fuel Contaminated. Verify by operating the engine with clean
fuel from a temporary supply tank. Drain and
flush the fuel supply tank.
Plugged Fuel Filter. Check/replace filter.

Throttle Linkage Misadjusted or Damaged. Adjust or repair linkage.
High Pressure Fuel Leak. Inspect/correct leaks in the high pressure lines,
fittings, injector sealing washers or delivery
valves.
Aerated Fuel. Bleed the fuel system and correct source of the
leak.
One or More Injectors Worn or Malfunctioning. Check/replace the injectors.
Fuel Injection Pump /Delivery Valves Malfunctioning. Remove fuel injection pump. Have calibration
checked.

Idle Speed Too Low for the Accessories. Check/ adjust low idle screw.
Engine Mounts Over-Tightened, Damaged or Loose. Verify condition of mounts.
High Pressure Fuel Leak. Inspect/ correct leaks in the high pressure lines,
fittings, injection sealing washers or delivery
valve seals.
Air in the Fuel System. Bleed the fuel system and correct the source of
the air.
Fuel Return Overflow Valve Malfunctioning. Check/ replace fuel return overflow valve.
Fuel Supply Restricted. Clean pre-filters and screens and check fuel line
for restriction. Replace fuel filter.
Injector Needle Valve Sticking. Check/replace the injector.
Fuel Injector Pump or Delivery Valve Malfunctioning. Remove fuel injection pump. Have calibration
checked.
Valves Not Sealing. Adjust valve and check, if complaint still exist
check the valve seats and take corrective action.
Compression in One or More Cylinders Low. Perform a compression check and repair as
required.

Cause Action
Condition only Occurs at Idle. Adjust idle speed.
Engine is Cold. Allow engine to warm to operating temperature.
Fuel Injection Lines Leaking. Inspect/correct leaks in the high pressure lines,
fittings injector sealing washers, or delivery valves.
Air in the Fuel or the Fuel Supply is Inadequate. Check the flow through the filter and bleed the
system. Locate and correct the air source.
Malfunctioning Fuel Return Overflow Valve. Check/replace return overflow valve.
Fuel Supply Restricted. Clean pre-filters and screens and check fuel line
restriction. Replace fuel filter.
Fuel Contaminated. Verify by operating the engine with clean fuel from a
temporary tank. Checked the fuel contaminate
properly / completely drain out the contaminated fuel
from the tank and get the entire fuel system flushed .
Use clean uncontaminated fuel only.
Valve Adjustment Incorrect. Check for a bent push rod and adjust valves.
Injection Pump Timing Incorrectly Adjusted. Check top dead center (TDC) check/adjust injection
pump timing. Check/time the fuel injection pump
using the spill port timing if equipment is available.
Compression in One or More Cylinders Low. Perform a compression and repair as required.
Injectors Malfunctioning. Check/replace injectors.
Injection Pump (Delivery Valves) Defective. Remove fuel injection pump. Have calibration
checked.
Camshaft Out of Time. Check/correct gear train timing alignment.
Camshaft or Tappets Damaged. Inspect camshaft and tappets.

Tachometer Malfunctioning. Verify engine speed with hand tachometer. Correct as
required.
Engine Overloaded. Verify high idle speed without load. Investigate
operation to be sure correct gear is being used.
Throttle Linkage Worn or Incorrectly Adjust linkage for stop-to-stop fuel control lever travel.
Adjusted.
Mechanical Shut off Lever Partially Check/place shutoff lever in run position.
Engaged.
Fuel Quality Poor. Verify by operating the engine from a temporary tank of
No.2 diesel fuel. Refer to the " Fuel Recommendations/
Specifications"
Fuel Supply Inadequate. Check the flow through the filter to locate the source of
the restriction.
Fuel Return Overflow Valve Malfunctioning. Check/replace fuel return overflow valve.
Fuel Injection Pump Malfunctioning. Remove fuel injection pump. Have calibration checked.

Engine Overloaded. Check for added loading from malfunctioning
accessories or driven units, brakes dragging and
other changes in vehicle loading.
Fuel Control Lever Misadjusted. Check/correct for stop-to-stop travel.
Mechanical/Shutoff Lever Partially Engaged. Check/replace shutoff lever in run position.
Fuel Quality Poor. Verify by operating the engine from a temporary
tank of No. 2 diesel fuel.
High Pressure Fuel Leak. Inspect/correct leaks in the high pressure lines,
fittings injector sealing washers or delivery valve
seals.
Fuel Supply Inadequate. Check the flow through the filter to locate the
source of the restriction.
Air in the Fuel System. Bleed the fuel system and check for suction
leaks.
Malfunctioning Fuel Return Overflow Valve. Check/ replace return overflow valve.
Oil Level Incorrect. Check/correct oil level.
Intake Air Inadequate or Overheated. Inspect/replace air cleaner element Look for
other restrictions. Check charge air cooler for
internal restriction. Replace restricted cooler.
Check/clean debris from front of charge air
cooler.
Exhaust Restriction. Check/correct exhaust system.
Exhaust Leak at the Manifold or Turbocharger. Check/ Correct leaks in the manifold or
turbocharger gaskets. Look for a cracked

Coolant Level Low. Check/replenish coolant. Locate and correct
the source of the coolant leak.
Radiator Fins Plugged. Blow debris from fins.
Water Pump or Fan Drive Belts Loose. Check/correct belt tension.
Radiator Hose Collapsed , Restricted or Leaking. Check/replace hose.
Lubricating Oil Level High. Check/drain oil to correct level.
Cooling Fan Shroud Damaged or Missing. Inspect shroud, repair/replace or install.
Pressure Cap Incorrect or Malfunctioning. Replace cap with the correct rating for the
system.
Over concentration of Anti-Freeze. Remove part of the coolant from cooling
system and replace with water.
Temperature Sensor or Gauge Malfunctioning. Verify that the gauge and temperature sensor
are accurate.
Thermostat Malfunctioning, Incorrect or Missing. Check/replace the thermostat.
Air or Combustion Gases in the Cooling System. Make sure the fill rate is not being exceeded
and the correct vented thermostat is installed.
If aeration continued, check for a compression
leak through the head gasket.
Water Pump Malfunctioning. Check/replace the water pump.
Cooling Passages in Radiator, Head Gasket or Block Flush the system and fill with clean coolant.
Plugged.
Vehicle Cooling System Design. Confirmation of correct fan, radiator, and other
cooling system components.
Fuel Injection Pump Timing Incorrect. Verify fuel injection pump timing marks are
aligned.
Fuel Injection Pump Over fueled. Remove fuel injection pump. Have calibration
checked.
Air Flow to the radiator Inadequate or Restricted Check/repair fan shroud, fan sensors, and fan

Cap Rated Pressure Too Low. Check the radiator pressure cap.
Thermostat Incorrect or Malfunctioning. Check thermostat.
Air or Combustion Gases in the Cooling System. Check for air or combustion gases in the
cooling system.
Vent Line From Engine Radiator Plugged/Incorrectly Check routing and operation of vent line.

External Leaks. Visually inspect for lubricating oil leaks.

Turbocharger Seals Leaking Oil. Check/replace turbocharger.

deterioration. Make sure water pump, tensioned pulley, fan

Make sure the accessories turn freely.
Intake Air or Exhaust Leaks. Check & rectify Leakage.
Valve Lash Excessive. Adjust valves. Make sure the push rods are not bent or the
rocker levers are not severely worn.
Turbocharger Noise. Check turbocharger impeller and turbine wheel for housing
contact.
Power Function Knock. Check/replace rod and main bearings.
