1. Introduction
This report is about the pavement structure design for EXTENSION OF SOUTHERN

EXPRESSWAY PROJECT (SECTION 3) - FORM WETIYA TO ANDARA WEWA.

The pavement structure design is carried out according to OVERSEAS ROAD NOTE 31

(Fourth Edition) - A guide to the structural design 0/ bitumen- sill/aced roads in

tropical and sub-tropical countries. The pavement design life of this project is 15 years.

The pavement structure adopts a flexible pavement with asphalt concrete surface and
I granular road base that has proposed in the contract document.

I 2. The Design Process

I There are three main steps to be followed in designing a new road pavement. These

are:
1 (i) Estimating the amount of traffic and cumulative number of equivalent'

I (ii)
standard axles that will use the road over the selected design.1ife;

Assessing the strength of the subgrade soil over which the road is to be built;

I (iii) Selecting the most economical combination of pavement materials and layer

thicknesses that will provide satisfactory service over the design life of the o
I pavement (1t is usually necessary to assume that an appropriate level of
o
z
en
c
maintenance is also carried out).

! Hambantota Port and Colombo. Meanwhile, Section 3 is situated between Section 2 ~s

-
and Section 4. According to the comprehensive analysis. about CNSA of Section 2,

I Section 3 and Section 4, the traffic class reaches T7. Consequently, we recommend that

the design traffic class for Section 3 (CH56+00O-CH71 +000) should be T7.

Therefore, according to the above circumstances, the Cumulative Number of Standard

Axles Calculation sheet (ESEP-CSC-S3-WD-TEC-PV-RE1-1002-02) has been

submitted to review on 23td Feb, 2017, and approved by RDA and Engineer on 1st Mar,

2
2017. The conclusion is given as below:

2.2 Pavement Investigation

I 2.2.1 Profile of the Road

The road is divided into fill, cut (soil/rock), bridges, and structures sections depending
I on the geometrical design, geological features and other considerations (refer Annex

A).
]
2.2.2 Geotechnical Investigations

I The design strength of subgrade is measured in terms of CBR. The subgrade strength

of fill areas are taken as CBR of formed subgrade after embankment filling. The
I subgrade strength of cut areas are estimated based on the properties of the soil (Unified

Classification) in the Borehole Data at cut depth. Data obtained from Borehole Log
I details in cut area is summarized in Annex B. For more detail, Report on Borehole

Special Notes:
I. Designed CBR should be measured at 4-day soaked condition of compaction.
2. Subgrade CDR (4-day soaked) at 95% MDD in modified condition of
compaction in the embankment filling material should not be less than 5%.
3. In the cut area, if formed bottom having CDR less than 5% (4-day soaked) at
95% MDD in modified condition of compaction, should be excavated and
replaced with suitable well compacted material.
4. For CUI hard rock areas, as the sub-base placed between rock bottom and
Aggregate Base Course is forming a weak layer, sub-base material shall be
replaced with Aggregate Base Course material.
