Chapter three karma yoga

V 3.1 :-
ghoreghastly
Sometimes Ka consciousness is
misunderstood to be inertia, and one
with such a misunderstanding often
withdraws to a secluded place to become
fully Ka conscious by chanting the
holy name of Lord Ka. But without
being trained in the philosophy of
Ka consciousness, it is not
advisable to chant the holy name of
Ka in a secluded place, where one
may acquire only cheap adoration from
the innocent public.

LESSON SPP
We may also try to avoid the service by
giving intelligent excuse in our mind
,but we should enquire like arjuna from
guru/authority and not take own
decision.

entreaty for those desiring their
ultimate benefit.

CCP;-
Krishna in 2nd chapter initially talked
about fight , but after v 38 no talk
about fight ,some words like shanti
Chapter three karma yoga
which although mean peace of heart
,arjuna thought peace better than war.
Also in vedic literatue
buddhi=gyan=vairagya so from these
words of buddhi arjuna thought
renunciation is highest.
V 3.2;-

Krishna talked at four level

1) Gyan renounced inactivity
2) Niskama karma yoga renounced
activity -fighting for liberation .
3) Karma kand fruitive activity
fighting for attaing heaven.
4) Vikarm- sinful activity giving up
fighting.
Krishna here recommended niskam karma yoga-
understanding that Im not this body and
striving for liberation 2.(38-72)
Karma kand 2. (31-37)
Vikarma is not doing activity / not
fighting2.33 arjuna took duren hy avaram
karma as giving up fight but krishna meant
was giving up fruitive activity as compared
to niskama karma yoga.

Chapter three karma yoga
The eternal person (akta) is not attained
by actions. Muaka Upaniad 1.2.12
V 3.3;-
In 2.39 transition sankhya yoga -buddhi
yoga.
Skhya-yoga, - the analytical study of the
nature of spirit and matter, is the subject
matter for persons who are inclined to
speculate and understand things by
experimental knowledge and philosophy.
The indirect process is philosophical
speculation, by which, gradually, one may
come to the point of Ka consciousness;
and the other process is directly
connecting everything with Ka in Ka
consciousness.
Of these two( SANKHYA N BUDDHI), the path
of Ka consciousness is better because it
does not depend on purifying the senses by
a philosophical process. Ka
consciousness is itself the purifying
process, and by the direct method of
devotional service it is simultaneously
easy and sublime.
Arjuna of spotless intelligence (anagha),

types of people (loke) according to the
purity or impurity of their consciousness,
in terms of their aspiration for
liberation.
CCP:-

BG is devotional service sarva dharman Krishna
after telling all the paths ask arjuna to
surrender to him, not impersonal meditation or
ashtang yoga.
Prabhupad stressing on bhakti :-
1) mayavadis removed Krishna from BG.
2) Sp knows that people in kaliyuga are very
lazy may not read till conclusion .
Intellectual understanding is phiolosophy
and experience of philosophy is religion .
If only philosophy and no practice then no
experience, and if only practice but no
philosophy then faith will be weak,
sentimental ,fanatical.
Roughly chanting holy name can be said
religion and reading BG is philosophy we
need both.
For steady growth we need both
Science <theory and practical.
Religion < philosophy and practice.
Chapter three karma yoga
Material science is experimental but
spirituality is experiential.
Practice of spirituality helps us to gain
higher dimensional experience.
Theory without experiment is
unauthoritative,philosophy without religion
no experience.
We need to have balance of both philosophy
and religion.

V 3.4:-
SPP
Without purification, one cannot attain
success by abruptly adopting the fourth
order of life (sannysa).
Without purification of heart, sannysa is
simply a disturbance to the social order.
But bhakti even without performance of
prescribed duties is accepted by lord.
VCT:-
One with an impure heart cannot attain jna
by renunciation of activities recommended in
the scriptures (sannyast).
CCP;-
Not by external form one becomes the
devotee.
Sruti smriti puranadi
Mayavadis wrong conception simply by taking
sanyasa one becomes narayan.
V 3.5/6;-
Chapter three karma yoga
it is the nature of the soul to be always
active.
the spirit soul has to be engaged in the
good work of Ka consciousness; otherwise
it will be engaged in occupations dictated
by illusory energy.
But if the soul is engaged in his natural
function of Ka consciousness, whatever he
is able to do is good for him.
CCP;-
We are acting due to presense of soul , soul
is active in bound and in liberated state
also.body is like burden for the soul.modes
are director of activities but source of
energy is soul.
HYPOCRACY;-
To seek prestige and previlage that comes
from the position without doing sacrifice
and responsibility required for that
position.
We may also get bad thoughts but that is not
hypocracy if we try to change them and
should not consciously cultivate such
thoughts.
Krishna is talking about jnana renounciation
as it involves inactivity not bhakti because
it has activity at all stages.
V 3.7;-
The whole institution of vara and rama is
designed to help us reach this goal of
life,(going back to godhead)
Chapter three karma yoga
For self-realization, one can live a
controlled life, as prescribed in the
stras, and continue carrying out his
business without attachment, and in that way
make progress.
CCP;-
Renunciation should not be taken to avoid
responsibility. Both renounciant and public
have to be careful otherwise can create
havoc in society.
Developing relationship with Krishna
involves taking up responsibility ,anxiety
we should not run away from anxiety, but also
take up anxiety that is manageable.
V3.8;-
So-called renunciation for the purpose of
maintenance is never approved by the Lord,
nor by any religious scripture.
CCP;-

Sariryatra- souls journey in body that is

bodily maintenance.
3 reasons not to give up activity;-(
renounciaton not to be done by arjuna)
1) It is unnatural.
2) It will cause social disruption,
3) Will Not be able to maintain body.

Doing work as sacrifice one doesnt become
bound by karma.
Now chapter will flow if you are not
qualified for jyana yajna then do karma

V 3.10;-
By performance of yaja, the conditioned
souls gradually become Ka conscious and
become godly in all respects.
Sakrtana-yaja and Ka consciousness go
well together.
V 3.11;-
SPP;-

purification of existence finer tissues
in the memory become sanctified, and
when memory is sanctified one can think
of the path of liberation, and all
these combined together lead to Ka
consciousness.
pure food is one element or aga of
cultivation of jna.

Science is tool to be used to glorify lord.
Science itself doesnt reject presence of lord.
Misuse of science by materialistic people lead
to non belief in lord.

Automatic means unaware of controller. Saying
nature works automatically means unaware
controller. Decoding mechanism is manipulative
but it is ignoring controller, understanding
higher being is supplicative.
Understanding mechanism and controller is
complementary, not contradictory.
We have simplistic idea of things but it may not
be that way ex heaven is up means situated on y-

VERSE 3.12;-
For one who cannot understand what the
Personality of Godhead is, sacrifice to the
demigods is recommended.
According to the different material qualities of
the persons concerned, different types of yajas
are recommended in the Vedas.
ultimately all yajas are meant for gradual
promotion to the transcendental position.
Chapter three karma yoga
If we forget the purpose of human life and
simply take supplies from the agents of the Lord
for sense gratification and become more and more
entangled in material existence, which is not
the purpose of creation, certainly we become
thieves, and therefore we are punished by the
laws of material nature.

the attack of such an epidemic. Similarly,
food offered to Lord Viu and then taken by

material affection, and one who is
accustomed to this practice is called a
devotee of the Lord.
The Lord can be satisfied by sacrifices;
therefore, one who cannot perform them will
find himself in scarcitythat is the law of
nature. Yaja, specifically the sakrtana-
yaja prescribed for this age, must
therefore be performed to save us at least
from scarcity of food supply.

They can explain mechanism of rain but cant
explain completely why it is happening in

explanation.
We dont just have responsibility for our
and others bodies but for their souls also.
Physical affection is there in animals also
but we need to care for their souls also.
Vertical and horizontal relationship
Yagnya vertical relationship.
Connecting link between material and
spiritual is scripture.
Humans can acces lord through yagnya.yagnya
makes universal accesable.
Doing yagnya is like paying taxes we need to
continue to get benefits.

VERSE 3.16;-
SPP;-
The mammonist philosophy is "work very hard
and enjoy sense gratification".
There is no necessity of rigidly following
the performances of the prescribed yajas
for the transcendentalists who are above
vice and virtue; but those who are engaged
in sense gratification require purification
by the above mentioned cycle of yaja
performances.
The yaja system is planned in such a way
that sensory conscious persons may satisfy
their desires without becoming entangled in
the reaction of sense-gratificatory work.

We have to behave exemplery because it affect others life.we

canot be isolated and behave in self obessessd way.
Society is judged by caliber of its leaders/ role models.
Level of consciousness can be judged by role model of peoples.
Vulgarity goes by the name of boldness which is actually
shamelessnes,it causes subtle modeling in future it will be
considered normal as people want to be called bold, normal
things will be rejected as not being bold.
Scripture only can set standard, as other things change, leaders
should follow scripture.
Power of exmple is far more stroger than example of

Academically, one may be very learned, but
because of his long association with
material nature, he is in bondage.
Ka consciousness helps one to get out of

Vsans or saskras, impressions are means by
which experiences of previous lives stay with
the jva life after life. Under certain

memory of previous like or dislike. Desires

or impressions are powerful to instigate the

When a living entity comes in contact with

are meant to enjoy.
Origin of lust also comes from supreme as
athato brahma jigyasa
Mahashano = lust is all devouring as once it
is triggered then nothing remains sacred, can
devour everything and anything.
People like to see vulgarity in media but
when happens in real life then become
shocked, lust can not be trusted ,can
bewilder anyone.
VERSE 3.38 ;-
In the human form of life, one can conquer
the enemy, lust, by cultivation of Ka
consciousness under able guidance.
CCP;-
Fire / smoke = human can be kindleded
Mirror /dust = birds and beast will take
time to take up kc
Embryo /child = plants long time required
Lust is both thing and desire.
Chapter three karma yoga
Thing = impression in the mind (subtle)
Although impressions are there we can say no
to it , we cannot control external stimuli
but can avoid exposure.
VERSE 3.39;-

It is said in the Manu-smti that lust

cannot be satisfied by any amount of
sense enjoyment, just as fire is never
extinguished by a constant supply of
fuel.
While one enjoys sense gratification, it
may be that there is some feeling of
happiness, but actually that so-called
feeling of happiness is the ultimate
enemy of the sense enjoyer.
VCT;-
The phrase eternal enemy indicates
that lust must by all means be killed.
na jtu kma kmnm upabhogena
yati
havi ka-vartmeva bhya
evbhivardhate
As supplying butter to a fire does not
diminish the fire but instead increases
it more and more, the endeavor to stop
Chapter three karma yoga
lusty desires by continual enjoyment
can never be successful. SB 9.19.14
CCP;-
Here gyani is soul.
Lust is eternal enemy ;-
Longevity torture life after life.
Identity generally people are not even able to
identify lust think
obstruction to lust is cause of suffering.
Strategy -Turns our own energy against us .
Materialist also acknowledge that lust is fire
but think that it can be satisfied by indulgence
that is the mistake.
Grihastha ashram gives realization not by
indulgence but by practice of dharma.
World is maithyunya agar.
Vish destroys only after consumption but
vishaya destroys just by contemplation be
very careful.
VERSE 3.40;-

Mind is the center of all the activities of

the senses, and thus when we hear about
sense objects the mind generally becomes a
reservoir of all ideas of sense
gratification; and, as a result, the mind
Chapter three karma yoga
and the senses become the repositories of
lust.
BV;-

Bewilderment means that lust makes the jva

disinclined to knowing tm and inclined to
enjoy sense objects.
Lust resides in senses, mind and the
intelligence.
CCP;-

lust is not in the form , dress of opposite

sex but in our mind , intelligence, senses.
One has to take responsibility of ones own
behaviour.
By a particular dress one sends particular
type of messege one should be careful how
one presents himself.
Women also has to regulate their senses by
dressing properly.
When lust covers intelligence , then
intelligence instead of protecting us
,drives to fulfill lust .
Dont worr will people find me out , but
worry about why lust is finding me out.
Inittially we cannot put too much faith on
intelligence, so in general exposure to
sense objects has to be restricted.
Chapter three karma yoga
Avoid prolonged contact with women,in
emergency we have to do needful.
Physical=is gross material.
Lust is situated in senses means they are
in subtle organ/ faculty of vision.
Link ;- how to control and conquer lust.
Verse 3.41;-

curb this great symbol of sin [lust] by

regulating the senses.
lust, destroys the urge for self-
realization and specific knowledge of the
self.
Jna refers to knowledge of self as
distinguished from non-self, or in other
words, knowledge that the spirit soul is not
the body.
Vijna refers to specific knowledge of the
spirit soul's constitutional position and
his relationship to the Supreme Soul
VCT;-
First senses should be conquered as they are
easier than mind and intelligence.
Previously stopping the senses was not
recommended, since the mind still will dwell
on sense objects. Here Ka is stating that
the senses should be controlled by proper
engagement, but not stopped, and this will
help control the mind from dwelling on
Chapter three karma yoga
enjoyment. Mind and intelligence should also
be controlled by suitable engagement, but
ultimately, if effort is not made to
understand the tm and develop taste in the
tm, all endeavors to control senses, mind
and intellect will be futile.
CCP;-
In vedic culture ,Bull is considered
strongest among the domestic animals so
strong people were called like a bull.
Controlling the lust is considered
heroism in vedic culture.
Sense control is also heroism.
Consencus is not he basis of moral
truth.as hitler killing jews although
many people agreed cannot be justified.
Hero /villian behind the heroine both are
wrong.
Lust destroys urge to self realisation.
Too much pleasure on material level makes
one feel diinterested to spiritual life.
Having little austerity in life is also
good .
LINK ;- why not coquer the mind and the
intelligence first.

Verse 3.42;-
SENSES ( conquerers of
ten direction cannot conquer)
Chapter three karma yoga

Mind ( more
stronger as active during sleep when
senses are not acting)

Intelligence ( more stronger as

active during deep sleep when mind is silent)

soul ( strongest
exists when even intelligence is
destroyed by jnana)
CCP;-

Prabhpads usage living entity= conditioned

soul
Soul = soul proper.
Senses have some energy due to being contact
with suol so they are stronger than sense
objects.( senses=horses)
Mind is above senses as has more energy than
senses runs strongly after sense
objects.active during the dream when senses
are not active.( mind =rein)
Intelligence more stronger than mind as can
control mind.
Chapter three karma yoga
Soul is topmost as even intelligence is
dependent on soul for consciousness/ energy.
First one has to regulate downward pull.
VERSE 3.43;-

steady the mind by deliberate spiritual

intelligence [Ka consciousness] and
thusby spiritual strength-conquer this
insatiable enemy known as lust.
CCP;-

Situatiang on spiritual platform means

thinking of krishna .
Cupid indicated by flower arrow initially
soft but then pirces with painful part.
If we are not hooked to something higher
then we will fall to something lower .as we
dont have spontaneous attraction to
