There are so many different pieces of apparatus that are used in biology that it will be impossible to mention them

all here but here are

some examples:

Apparatus used in biology

A magnifying glass: This is used to give magnified images of an object

A Petri dish: This is used to hold a culture so that bacteria, viruses and cells can be grown on them and studied.

A thermometer: This is used to measure temperature.

A microscope: This is used to look at things in greater detail because it will magnify them by many times. They are usually used to
examine things that are too small to see with the naked eye.

A test tube: This is a small glass tube that is used to hold, mix and sometimes to heat either liquids or solids. There are also used in
chemistry.

A dissecting pan: This is a pan that is used during dissections so that fluids or organs can be contained without spillage.

Dissecting scissors: Used for cutting up organs and tissue.

Dissecting pin: Used to hold an organ or tissue in place when it is being dissected.

Forceps: These are used for holding, grasping, extracting and manipulating things; forceps are also used by surgeons.

Bunsen burner: This is used as a source of heat and is made from a hollow tube that fits round a flame. It has an opening at the base
that can be adjusted to regulate the air flow and to control the flame.

Safety goggles: These are worn by operators in the laboratory and are used to protect the eyes from debris, or splashes from chemicals.

Basic Laboratory Glassware and Equipment

This page details common laboratory equipment and their appropriate use. Knowing the proper use will help ensure safe laboratory
practices

Frequently used as a heat source in the absence of flammable

materials.

Buret
Balance
Used for dispensing an accurate volume of a liquid.
Used for
measuring mass.

Clay Triangle

Used to support a crucible during heating.

Beaker Crucible

Used to hold, mix, and heat liquids. Used for holding chemicals during heating to very high
temperatures.

Beaker Tongs
Crucible Tongs
Used to pick up beakers.
Used to hold crucibles.

Bunsen Burner
Erlenmeyer Flask Used to crush and grind materials.

Used to hold and mix chemicals. The small neck is to facilitate

mixing without spilling.
Pipet Bulb

Used to draw liquids into a pipe.

Evaporating Dish

Used to heat liquids for evaporation.

Ring Clamp

Used with a ring stand to hold glassware, such as a beaker or a

Forceps funnel.

Used to pick up or hold small objects.

Ring Stand

Funnel Used to hold or clamp laboratory glassware and other

equipment in place, so it does not fall down or come apart.
Used to transfer liquids or fine-grained materials into
containers with small openings. Also used for filtration.

Scoopula

Graduated Cylinder Used to transfer solids.

Used to measure a precise volume of a liquid.

Striker

Mortar and Pestle Used to light a Bunsen burner.

Used to secure glassware to a ring stand.

Stirring Rod

Used for stirring and mixing. Volumetric Flask

Used to prepare solutions to an accurate volume.

Test Tube

Used to hold and mix liquids. Volumetric Pipet

Used to measure small amounts of liquid very accurately.

Never pipet by mouth! Use pipetting aids.
Test Tube Clamp

Used to hold a test tube, particularly when hot.

Wash Bottle

Used to rinse pieces of glassware and to add small quantities of

Test Tube Rack water.

Used to hold several test tubes at one time.

Watch Glass

Thermometer (digital or alcohol, not mercury) Used to hold solids while they are being weighed or to cover a
beaker.
Used to measure temperature in Celsius.

Wire Gauze
Utility Clamp
Used to support a container, such as a beaker, on a ring stand
while it is being heated. May have a fiberglass or ceramic
center.
