RESEARCH TITLE- FROM NURSE TO DOCTOR: A NARRATIVE INQUIRY

GUIDED QUESTIONS FOR INTERVIEW

insights and experiences of a BSN-Physician as a medical student
What subjects in medicine did you find easier and why?
o "Nangapa talaga ako sa first year, lalo na histology, it was really different. You
deal with different ano ... kasi consultants yung teacher mo. So, Histology
was very difficult. Ano ba yung subjects namin nun? Histology, Anatomy, Firs
year yun, Microbiology . Oo nakatulong yung microbiology (nursing microbio)
lalo na, sino nga yung teacher namin... teacher namin nun is doctor (sa
microbio). Yung time kasi namin ang teacher namin sa microbio is a doctor..
so during that time na first year med school, nagaturo din sya, so microbio
(nursing) helped, parang almost the same talaga lalo na yung mga virus,
bacteria..yun lang mas extensive lang ang microbio sa medicine; syempre
yung mga drawing pero during the nursing naka help yung microobio (I think
she means different way of teaching styles or new environment since she
mentioned about having a consultant or a doctor as their professor)
o follow - up question: Perhaps there are other subjects that you found a
little easier, there were subjects that involved assessment, or similar to
that .. assessment, yes. We have this in medicine.. PDX yata parang
Physical Diagnosis na subject so parang it also helped, kasi you do history
taking, and diba sanay na ang nursing, we do history taking, then also how
you diagnose patients kasi we also have nursing diagnosis and then yung
assessment so we also follow yung SOAP during (intership and rle duties?),
so subjective.. so your more familiar paano yung SOAP. yun naka help yun,
yung nursing subject na yun (health assessment ?) and then Pharma and
patho.. Sa pharma.. nakatulong naman in a way konte pero sa med school
kasi yung pharma din is very extensive pero so far it helped also lalo na in
nursing your more familiar with drugs.. yung mga dosage paano mag
compute; so during that time na may pharma, so you know how compute the
dose also so dun din medyo naka help
What subjects in medicine did you struggle in the most and why?
o Surgery, mahirap takaga yung surgery, Patho, mahirap takaga yung Patho.
Why? it's hard kasi parang in surgery. it's a combination of anatomy and
then parang dapat solid talaga ang background mo sa anatomy para sa
surgery, and in surgery, we use parang two (2) books, the Schwartz and yung
isa, nakalimutan ko yung isa.. So we also ahave to be familiar with all the
structures, sa muscle, sa nerves, so mahirap talaga ang surgery and yung
teacher factor din kasi... so yung teacher namin sa surgery, ang exam namin
nun was fill in the blanks.. so walang choices, tapos niyan i-drawing, so you
draw the triangles of the neck .. so yung mahirap talaga.. So yung patho din
mahirap sya, kasi parang i-memorize, parang surgery and patho na parang i-
memorize mo talaga yung libro.. so yun, doon ako nahirapan
what challenges did you face as a medical student coming from a nursing course?
And how did you overcome those challenges?
o challanges.. isa sa object-wise is how to pass yung subjects na like, first year
and second year subjects, pero during the third year and fourth year, sabi nga
nila.. if you ask any consultant or any mga doctors na din, sabihin nila doon
ka magkakaroon ng edge over the other courses, sa third and fourth year mo.
pero on the first two years mahirap talaga. how did you overcome those
challenges? how do you overcome.. parang self-discipline.. ganyan, wala ka
kasing choice.. so sa first year parang you either make it or break it. so
kailangan since you have to have the determination that you really have to
pass, there is no other way, so even though pasang-awa pero dapat pasado.
So during that time if you ask any medical student, naman talaga siguro, you
have to be ready if you want go to medicine, kasi ako, I wasn't ready, kasi i
don't have any doctor parang member of the family, so we all thought na
parang baka almost the same lang sa nursing.. parang study..ganyan then
pasado kana, pero during med school it was really different kasi parang you
really have to be prepared na your going to have to lose some social
interaction. Like kunyare, sanay ka sa nursing na party-party ganyan, sa med
school, hindi ka talaga pwede, kasi you have to meet deadlines like, even
though ang exams namin at that time is naka-schedule like for example 2
weeks from now, may exam kayo nang isang subject pero yung chapters
naman is very extensive like six chapters so paano mo ma-study yun over the
weekend ? so you really cannot, so parang you have to be prepared na
parang there would be like days or nights na you will have lots of sleepless
nights (or days,) so you have to be prepared. I think readiness sa pag
studying ahead, and then it's not.. ako kasi hindi ako mabilis mag basa, super
matagal ako magbasa so parang kailangan mo siya.. You have an edge if you
are a fast reader, tapos kasi you have to read it over and over for how many
times. I have a classmate who is also a nursing graduate, but she is a fast
reader and she read the chapters in the book for about two to three times niya
mabasa, so you have an edge if you read fast tapos parang reading with
comprehension na talaga yung three times. Then self-determination, support
from your family is really needed kasi may mga times talaga na yung time na
yun may mga bagsak bagsak. You have to have a really strong family support
na who would push you na parang "sige, okay lang yan.. bawi nalang sa next
semester" kasi cumulative man din yung grade so parang if ever bagsak ka
sa first sem, it doesn't mean na sa second sem hindi kana makabawi, usually,
second sem talaga yung pang bawi time namin You have to have strong
family support, of course, kailangan may faith in God ka din kasi kailangan
mo talaga yun, kasi during those times parang your trying and then grabeng
trials(challenges), emotional times. Kasi syempre if you're sanay sa nursing
na eto siya pwede pa, parang okay na, konteng effort pero malaki na yung
grades mo, in med school it's really different, kasi parang you really need to
strive hard para maka pasa and para maka get nang good grades.
According to most BSN medical student, the first and second year were the hardest
during medical school, do you agree with them, and why?
o Yes, Super different, kasi nga its still your adjustment period, if your used to
have it like lalo na sa nursing, sa ating course na parang if you read this,
tapos niyan if you study or you listen to your teacher or CIs makapasa kana,
in med school it's really different, kasi lalo na sa first two years, it's like
schoold based talaga, no exposure to hospital so sanay din na parang
lecture base in DMSF. If you go to another med school, iba din yung way of
training nila nang medical students, so sa atin kasi, sa DMSF, it's more on
lecture type and then usually sa ibang school like, if you go to CIM, parang
bibigyan ka nang case and then kayo na mag ano (study?) and then the
following day, they will discuss the case , parang case based sila; there are
no lecture type, so ikaw bahala if you read your book or not , ganun sa ibang
schools; sa atin (DMSF) lecture type sya so parang conventional type na
maglelecture and meron lang kaming parang once a week na parang
bibigyan ka nang case, you will get the history, dissect the case and then you
will give the management ganun siya, pero usually parang once or twice a
week lang yun siya pero most of the time lecture type talaga siya. yung
consultant (professor) magtuturo tapos makikinig ka, however problem nun
kung sa nursing, kung sanay ka na mag-listen ka lang sa teacher kahit hindi
ka na masyadong mag basa ng books, makapasa ka na. Sa med school, iba
kasi, if you only listen and you don't read your books, hindi siya enough kasi
ang ibibigay sayo na exam is not base on the lecture. but based on the book
Based on your experiences, what aspects of your medical education do you think
your BSN premed course helped you in best?
I think during the third and fourth year na talaga ng med school year naka help ang
nursing kasi nga practical na kasi during third and fourth year so exposure so
hospital, tapos diba sa nursing they are teaching us na parang be patient tapos like
always ready to help, mga ganyan so attitude-wise naka help yung sa nursing and
then during din sa exposure sa hospital din talaga nakatulong for me, yung nursing
na course
How Did your previous experience in clinical duties help you when you started
having clinical rotations as a medical student ?
o Yun, dun nga sya naka help kasi during the our duties (during nursing), how
you handle with patience lalo na with difficult patient, dun naka tulong ang
nursing, tapos communication tapos niyan like how to explain (procedures
and etc.) tapos sa computation din, lalo na sa exposure sa pediatrics we
mostly do computation, dun siya naka help na how you compute the dose,
how you get familiarize with the medications, fluids, how you regulate, so dun
din you need to check also paano mo siya ibigay, so more on the iclerkship
and nung third year talaga naka help, for me ang nursing. Lalo na yung
Return Demo, dun din nka tulong kasi in med school, in clerkship before you
get exposed to the hospital, may isang month kami during pre-clerkship, one
month na ipapa-redo sa inyo ang lahat (procedures) donning of gloves, dun
naka help ang nursing parang easier siya kasi sanay tayo nung meron din
silang ibigay na paper like how you don gloves, gown m, how you do hand
washing, so easier siya during that time kasi sanay kana na "ah, eto yung
gawin ko.." kasi meron din kami nung parang "explain the procedure to the
patient" so dun talaga naka help yung mga return demonstration during the
clerkship...
