Intensive Speaking

Grade Level: 1st- formal language arts assessment


SOLs: 1.5a -The student will apply knowledge of how print is organized and read. Read
from left to right and from top to bottom.
WIDA standard: ELP Standard 2: The Language of Language Arts, Summative
Framework Listening: Story Elements - State actions of characters or describe events
depicted in story pictures or wordless picture books in small groups or pairs.
WIDA level: 3-developing
Purpose/objectives: Students will be able to read The Long Walk story aloud, and read
the passage with 90% accuracy being able to read 43 or more out of 48 words correct.
The students will be able to describe what the characters did from the picture. This
speaking task is to help students practice fluency and work on story sequencing.
Directions:
1. Read The Long Walk.
2. Echo read the story with the teacher once.
3. Read the story aloud to the teacher.
4. Look at pictures of The Long Walk.
5. Put the pictures in the order of the story.
6. Recite the story from the beginning to end for the teacher. Explain what
characters did in the story.
Example:

Test taker hears


Two Penguins are going for a walk ..
Now can you read this story to me?
Test taker says
Two penguins are going for a walk.
In the Beginning the penguins
At the end they went ..
Assessment items: The students will be asked to read aloud the story and retell the
story aloud using the pictures.
Students will be graded on if they can pronounce each word in the story
How fluid the student reads the story
If they self correct while reading
Speaks clearly
Retells the story in the correct sequence
How many details they share about the story
Teachers will have the story in front of them and mark the errors on the page when a
student mispronounces a word or an error in reading the story aloud.

Scoring:
Pronunciation - 4 pts possible
1- Can pronounce less than half the words in the story
2- Can pronounce half the words in the story
3- Can pronounce 75% of the words in the story
4- Can pronounce 90% or above of all the words in the story: 43 or more words
pronounced correctly out of 48 words in the story.

Fluidity - 3 pts possible


1- Student can read the story and stops more than 3 times
2- Student can read the story and stop 2 times
3- Student can read the story and stop 1 or fewer times.

Self correct - 2 pts possible


1- the student did not use the self correcting strategy while reading
2- the student used the self correcting strategy while reading

Retelling/details 3 pts possible


1- the student retold the beginning middle and end of the story
2- the student retold the beginning, middle, end with 1-2 supporting details
3- the student retold the beginning, middle, end with 3 or more supporting details.

Total: /12 points


The rubric will be with the teacher as they are performing the assessment and will be
marked off while the student is speaking. At the bottom, the teacher will write what the
student did well and what needs some work. This assessment can also help teachers
gauge what they need to reteach or go over in small groups. This is an individual
assessment.
