TIPS SUMMARY:

Learn

Language and vocabulary in ARTS (Literature, Music, Painting, etc.)

Reading time

_ Attention to all blank spaces types of answers to expect (especially first/coming question)

_ Read & underline key content words.

Listening

WHO are the SPEAKERS? WHICH ONE to FOCUS on for each question.

FOCUS on LISTENING. DO NOT KEEP LOOKING at the QUESTIONS while listening if you can REMEMBER
them. LOOKING distracts LISTENING.

FOCUS on LISTENING, DO NOT spend time to wonder unsure question (do it afterward). For COMPLEX
questions, we may even have to LISTEN TO THE WHOLE PARAGRAPH BEFORE ANSWERING 3-4
questions.

There are often IRRELEVANT DETAILS and EXTRA TALKS to DISTRACT.

Pay attention to the TENSE of verbs (as long as youve studied it vs as long as you study it)

Pay attention to PLURAL/SINGULAR (the teams is right answer, the team is not)

DO NOT COMBINE WORDS (South East, not Southeast)

FILL IN BLANK SPACES: Parallel hints (mentioning time and grammar any conversations/characters),
key terms (full, trim down to word limit). For HEARD-BUT-CANNOT-IDENTIFY WORDS (mostly due to
NON-EXPECTATION), practice CONVERT PRONUNCIATION TO ENGLISH WRITING NEED EXCELLENT
KNOWLEDGE OF PRONUNCIATION

QUESTIONS OTHER THAN FILL IN BLANK: EXACT WORDS mentioned are often TRAPS.

Map questions: view from drivers perspective, NOT from map top view perspective

Comparison questions: adj strength (cutting edge, inspirational > solid), linking words
Implied questions: ending/concluding part?

Implied questions with MULTIPLE MATCHING. Need to IGNORE the words used. There may be NO KEY
WORDS. WORDS used are usually DISTRACTION/TRAPS. Need to listen, understand, and check yes/no +
loi tr. TAKE NOTE when LISTENING.

SELF TRY-AND-ERROR:

8:45 am (-1 mark: '8:55')

Commuted (-1 mark 'Commuter') (--> parallel hint)

Afternoon* (--> careful of diversion; parallel hint)

Research* (--> pay attention to all the blank spaces)

darkness to lightness* (--> dark vs light, key terms, not be confused by later discussion)

human companionship* (--> FULL key term, within word limit, cut off if needed)

faiths (-1 mark 'poverty' --> Key terms are often mentioned TOGETHER with their related terms
separated by , )

Problem: the audio is actually easy to listen and understand. Its the reading of questions and writing of
answer that divert/distract me and cause wrong answer.

Solution: More practice of multitasking of listening, reading and answering. Read and underline key
content words in the questions quickly before listening. The underlined key words are cues for focused
listening. Follow the storyline while listening to predict when the answers will come
about/happen/take place.
