For 40 years the Tuchthuis Prison was used to hold criminals such as cheats and prostitutes. It was later
sold to the army and used to hold war criminals. The prison has been abandoned since 1990.
Holmesburg Prison- Built in 1896
Built in 1896 and abandoned in 1996, this prison was very unethical to today standards. The inmates
were used as subjects to experiment on resulting in many deaths. Since the 2000s the prison is mainly
used for movies and is not suitable for inmates.
Kresty Prison-Built in the 1730s
Once used as wine storage the Kresty Prison now holds over 900 inmates. There has been only one
break out in its history, known as the Red Terror. The Red Terror was when a group of inmates escaped
their cells and killed 20 officers in their sleep. They let over 800 inmates free and it took 3 years to round
everyone back up.
Mansfield Reformatory-Built in 1886
Once known for its positive attitude toward inmates, the prison was rewarded for its success. After 94
years the prison legacy became one of abuse and death. The prison was shut down in 1995 and is now
used for ghost tours.
This prison was only used for 50 years, and for good reason. The best word to describe this prison was
primitive and outdated. The prison closed after a fire that killed over 200 people.
Perm County-Built in 1811
Abandoned for the last 50 years, Perm County is now being used for ghost tours. It is said that the
victims of the abuse that went on in the jail still haunt the halls.
Philadelphia Eastern State Penitentiary- Built in 1856
This prison has a long line of abuse and misfortune in its history. The prison was abandoned in 1923 and
decayed rapidly. The land was bought in the 2000s and is now open as a ghost hunting hot spot.
This prison was shut down for its hurtful practices. Eastern State was solely a solitary confinement
prison. The inmates were all convicts with mental illness and they thought that the best way to help
them and to keep other safe, was to distance them from each other. Because of prolonged isolation,
many inmates suffer from hallucinations and many ended up taking their own lives.
