Reflection for Discourse Community

For our second assignment, we had to do an essay about a discourse community. What a

discourse community is, is a group of people with the same interest and goals. For this

assignment, we had to interview and examine a work place similar to your career path. I choose

the Cath lab discourse community because it was the closest I could get to my nursing major. I

had to put Swales six characteristics to the test to see if that is in fact what it takes to make a

discourse community work. After concluding my interviews and writing my essay, I came into

the conclusion that the six characteristics are needed to make a community work. If one of them

is missing, then the community wont be as effective to others. This assignments was one of the

hardest ones I have done because I had never done a literature review and it was very time

consuming because we had to physically go and examine others doing their job.
