Lesson Plan #1

Grade Level: Kindergarten

Target Learner: A lower elementary level learner who would like to learn more about Butterflies and
how their life cycle works.

Subject Integration: English and Science

Objective: The student will be able to recognize the proper order of a Butterflys life cycle and also be
able to construct their very own Butterfly using their knowledge of each of the different parts to a
Butterfly.

Lesson: A Butterfly Is Born

Materials:
-A Butterfly Is Born By: Melvin Berger (Big book)
-Butterflies (Zoobooks)
-Caterpillar/Butterfly transformation puppet
-Butterfly Life History Specimen Block
-What a Life! worksheet (attached)
-Build a Butterfly worksheet (attached)

Instruction Outline:

Day One:

Pre-Reading The teacher will begin with a few questions about the book, starting with the
cover.

Examples:
1. What is this? (while pointing at the butterfly on the cover page)
2. Have you seen a butterfly like this one before?
3. Do you know what kind of butterfly this is?

Next the teacher will write out the word butterfly and ask the student what all
they know or have heard about butterflies. Make a list of these facts.
First Reading The teacher will then read through the book, page by page, and make sure to point
out important details/facts about butterflies and their life cycles throughout the
story that the child may already know or need to know. Point out important
pictures as well to help them visualize.
Post-Reading After reading the teacher will ask the child if they would like to add anything else
to their list of butterfly facts. If more clarification is needed for the child, the
teacher will read the article in the Zoobooks on the life cycle of a butterfly to
further clarify each step and what happens in each one.

*Also the teacher can show the Butterfly Life Cycle Specimen Block as a visual for
the student to show what the butterfly will look like at each stage.

Ex: Specimen
Block

Then the teacher will demonstrate the life cycle worksheet and explain what the
child is to do (Directions listed on the sheet).

Once the child correctly labels each step in the butterfly life cycle, s/he will then
have his/her own copy of how the life cycle of a butterfly works to take home.

Day two:

Reading The teacher will read the article in the Zoobooks Butterflies that talks about and
explains the structure of butterflies. In this article the teacher will be able to help
the child name and recognize the different parts of a butterfly and the student will
be able to understand where each of those parts are located.

Creating The child will then create her/his own butterfly on a piece of paper using the
butterfly parts cut out worksheet attached. The child will need to place all the
butterfly parts in their correct location in order to make a proper butterfly image.
The child will then label each part and they can take it home as a reference later.
