This article, argues about how doctors are prescribing unnecessary antibiotics, which in

this case is for sore throat. Streptococcus has been bacteria that has been greatly resistant

to antibiotics such as amoxicillin and penicillin. A sore throat is usually something that

can be cured with homemade remedies but instead antibiotics are given and roughly $500

million were spent on unnecessary sore throat antibiotics. This article is beneficial to me

because it gives me a specific example on which antibiotic is being over prescribed.

In this website, the reporter talks about how overprescribing medication can lead to drug

addicts. Doctors are not realizing the great danger this problem is causing their patients.

A survey showed how 95 million people were prescribed opioids in 2015. The reporter

also mentions how many patients are being prescribed unnecessary medication and

instead are giving them to people who need them. This is beneficial to my argument

because it shows how prescribing medication can do more harm than good.
Rackley, J. C., Jr. (2010). Conclusion. In Opioid-Based Prescription Drugs, America's New

Cocaine: A Patient's Own Story (p. 67).

In this chapter, the author explains how it has gotten easier to obtain opioids and one of

those ways are through the doctors. Doctors are given more than necessary medication to

their patients and the patients are taking advantage of that. The remaining of the pills are

being sold out in the streets to make a profit. This is relevant to my issue because many

people are taking advantage of the medication that the doctors are prescribing, but

doctors should be more aware of the problem.

This newspaper article was written by a surgeon and says how he was told to give a

patient fresh out of surgery 30-90 opioid pills while his dad recovered with just a single

tablet of ibuprofen. Doctors are overprescribing just so that they wont receive a late

phone call from a patient asking for more pills. He argues how opioids are paid by the

insurance while over-the-counter pills are not and how opioids are now being used to

cure simple things such as headaches. This article is beneficial to my topic because it

gives me a reliable source due to this person being a surgeon and is opposing to

overprescribing.

This video, is focuses on a doctor who specializes in relieving pain who is refusing to

prescribe opioid to his patients. He talks about how relieving patients chronic pain and

suffering is his job and is completely safe. He doesnt ask them how much pain there are

in, he takes a Hippocratic oath and takes their word for it. People with chronic pain are

not being properly treated because not a lot of doctors will give them the necessary

medication. This video gives me a different point of view and understanding when it

comes to overprescribing opioids.

In this article, over prescribing has become an issue when it comes to antibiotics. Bacteria

is now becoming resistant to the antibiotics due to the misuse of prescription. This article

gives examples on which types of bacteria have become resistant to antibiotics such as

Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus Influenzae, and E. coli and explains how much

the resistance has increased, decreased or remained stable. Another reason why bacteria

is becoming more immune to antibiotics is because we are injecting antibiotics to animals

to increase livestock, which means once we eat it the antibiotics is now in our system

making the bacteria immune without even knowing it. This article is relevant to my

research because it explains how not only is the bacteria becoming resistant because of

clinical medicine, but also because we are misusing the power on antibiotics for

something that it was not meant for.

In this video, the narrators mention how doctors are somewhat responsible for the

increase in use of opioids. In here, they argue how such measure as making doctors do

intensive training to safely prescribe and identify abuse of opioids has only been approve

in the local level, but the only question here is, Will the doctors enforce it? Training like

this has failed to reach the floor at the state level for the past 2 years. This video is

relevant to my topic because it explains how doctors need to be more careful when it

comes to over prescribing because it can really harm someones life.
