The rst column of the 6t row in the Gothra table says Abhivadaye. Am I missing something

While telling the sootras for ex. i am Yajur veda, shud we tell both Apasthampa Soothra and
Bhodhayana Soothraa or one. if one how to choose which one. My husband doesnt know much
abt this. i hope u can guide me.

Would like to comment to the extant I understand. ABHIVAADAM IS A SORT OF

INTRODUCTORY SALUTATION DONE TO THE ELDERS and is done in such a way as not
to hear ones own name while introducing self. The names of Rishis are mentioned to
apprise ones lineage and which indicates the Gotram of the person who is doing the
Abhivadam and is recited by bowing the head in obeisense the names of the rishis (
and de ning the number of rishis vix., thriaarsheya or pancharsheya or saptharsheya
(the number of rishis forming the lineage of the individual pertaining to the gotra
followed by the Suthra and the Gotram followed by the one of the Vedas to which the
family belongs to followed by the individuals name. All this is done by shutting the
EARS closed by both hands preventing hearing ones own name
and ending as Aham Asmahibo.

You only have one sutra. Most south indian brahmins, especially iyengars (basing on your
name) are of apasthamba sutra.

In the Sutra list, you have given Aapasthamba and Bodhayana. There is another Suthra named
Sri Vaikanasa Sutra thousands of people follow this sutra. They are families of Archakas of
famous temples like Tirumala, Thiruvallikeni, ThirumalirunCholai, Sri villiputhur,
Gunaseelam and so on. You can add that Sutra also for bene t of posterity.

This page is very good and useful for youth.

Vaikanasa is an Agama,, and does not refer to the Sutra as it pertains to the

Please advise if Kashyapa gothram and Naidruva Kashpyapa are two different gothrams or are
they same

Sri Dhira Chaitanya Reply

March 19, 2016 at 3:27 pm

OM
I believe they are of the same gotram. Naidruva Rishi is reportedly the son of Avatsara
maharshi and grandson of Kasyapa. Sometimes the name of a rishi who belonged to a
particular gotram was added and they were also recognized as originators of a gotram.
So it is possible that Naidruva Kashyapa refers to the two rishis, both belonging to the
same Kasyapa gotram but one branch of the family also adding the name of Naidruva
rishi.
I could be wrong but it makes logical sense to me.
Om Sri Dhiraji

I belong to Badarayana gothra and I am from Kumbakonam. Our

Abhivadanam differs from the one mentioned in this page. Our
Abhivadanam :

(Shatamarshana) gotrah, Apastambha sutrah, Yajushhakadhyayi, (.. sharma)nama aham
asmi bhOh.
But,this version of abhivadanam (according to this page and many other pages) is associated
with Satmarshana
gothra.
Another web page(link below):

claims that both are the gotras.
can anyone pls explain me about this and resolve this controversy.

Swami,
Could also elaborate on why Abhivadanam is not done when saluting God, Sanyasins or a
ghosti (group of persons).?

In one of the upanayasams, I have hear that while saluting God it is not required since HE
already is aware of our lineage.
So have doubt if Abhivadaye is required when saluting elders who are aware of the lineage.
