(girl) come out by skin

Skin was a side-project of Swans. Their albums

Blood, Women, Roses and Shame, Humility, Revenge
were released in 1987. Vinyl 7-inch singles and 12-inch
extended plays with the song Come Out and various remixes
appeared at the time. The four versions are available on
Jarboes 2005 compilation A Mystery of Faith.
1
Come Out (duration 5:09) first appeared as track B1 on the 1987 vinyl LP format of Skins
Blood, Women, Roses. The dance track Come Out is atypical for its style (and wit in the
rapping sequence of two of the remixes) as Blood, Women, Roses is an album of mostly
avant-garde and bluesy torch songs with an ambiance of mournful spirituality or
metaphysical unease. Dirges like Well Fall Apart and My Own Hands portray scenarios of
sorrow and loss or suggest such even on the glacial interpretation of Cry Me A River.

Jarboe is responsible for vocals, keyboards, piano and sounds on Come Out whilst the drum
programming is by M. Gira. Composing credits are shared by the two of them. Vince
Lawrence is credited with original remix.
2
When Blood, Women, Roses was released on CD, Come Out (Vocal Dub) 3:09 appeared as
bonus track 10. The same mix as the LP track but a shorter edit (4:46) was released in 2005
on disc 1 of Jarboes compilation, A Mystery of Faith.

Come Out (vinyl LP and the only version on disc 1 of the Jarboe compilation) starts with
breathy vocalizing. The thudding bass and shuddering drumbeats contrast nicely with
Jarboes sparkling vocals so that the song appeals to both ears and feet.

3
Come Out (Vocal Dub), track no. 10 on the 1987 CD and the first version on the second disc
of A Mystery of Faith opens with the same breathy vocalizing but tapping, ticking or rattling
percussion has replaced the thuds and shudders. The arrangement is light and sparse with
vocals at the forefront.

The second version on Disc II of the Jarboe compilation (5:39) is the Rap mix by Rico
Conning, the rapping commencing at 4:28. The A-side Girl: Come Out of the vinyl 12 single
is 5 seconds longer but its the same mix and the rapping starts at the same point. The beat
is fast and bouncy and the breathy vocals emerge only after the instrumental intro.

4
The rap is an acerbic and hilarious mockery of hip-hop braggadocio: Do you know what I
mean? Am I being coy? Do you know what I mean? Well, Im talkin to the boys, Ill put on
my gun, Ill make sure its cocked, Ill wear my gun between my hips, the deeper my gun,
girl, the deeper my kiss.

The third version on Disc II of A Mystery of Faith is Girl: Come Out Dub of 6:30, remixed by
Rico Conning and M Gira. The rap starts at 4:59. The buoyant beat promotes a sense of
space and movement. Besides the vocal overdubs (there seems to be male vocals in the
initial vocalizing segment), the Dub is rich in reverb, samples and ambiance.
5
The live recording of The Man I Love ( George and Ira Gershwin) on the B-side is a soulful
and stately rendition, more appealing in my opinion than the studio version. This track also
appears on A Mystery of Faith.
