Lesson Title: Hybrid Animals Grade Level: Kindergarten

S & S Statements: Students will be introduced to basic sculpting, additive methods of creating
clay models, and will continue to practice visual analysis skills.

Concepts and Skills: Students will learn to apply ideas from a 2D concept sketch into a 3D clay
sculpture using sculpting and additive methods. Students will also analyze the characteristics of
other students sculptures.

Vocabulary: Synectics, Additive, Characteristics, Hybrid, Coil

Purpose of Lesson (Overall Lesson Objective): Given a range of examples of mythical

creatures, students will identify the different animal characteristics that make up a specific
mythical creature and be able to plan and create a hybrid animal with identifiable characteristics
made of two to three separate animals using pencil and paper and modeling clay.

Objectives:
1. Given the sketches of a hybrid creature using two to three animals produced last class, students
will securely join pieces of clay to render a 3D model of their 2D sketch using modeling clay.
2. Given models produced by other students, each student will accurately identify the
characteristics used in their peers sculptures.
3. Given the stories students created about their own creatures, students will fluently
communicate their story to their peers.

Assessment Criteria:
1. Students can apply the characteristics of two to three different animals used in their sketch to
a 3D model.
2. Peers can identify the characteristics intended to be used in the students final sculpture.
3. Students can provide a minimum of 3 facts about their creature in their story.
