Flipped Lesson Plan

Lesson Title:

Subject: Math

Level: 4th
Grade

Standard: MGSE4.MD.3 Apply the area and perimeter formulas for

rectangles in real world and mathematical problems.

Objective: Find the width of a rectangular room given the area of the
flooring and the length

Step 1: Students gain familiarity with new material before class

What instructional materials and resources will you use for students to
familiarize themselves with the content prior to class? The pre-class work
should set the scene for the in-class activity. Plan through how you will
communicate the new instructional ideas. Would students benefit more from
watching a video demonstration outside of class at their own pace and as
often as needed or would some other media type (i.e.: text, animation,
graphic) serve the presentation of instructional content more effectively?

Student Learning Resources at Home

Example
Watch video 1 (Learn how to calculate the area of a square and
rectangle. Math lesson for kids) for 2 minutes http://www...
Play Game (Area and Perimeter) for 20 minutes http://www...
Teacher self-created materials: infographic & hyperdoc

Step 2: Activities that motivate students to prepare before class

What kinds of activities will motivate students and prepare them for class?
What questions will I ask students? What should students be able to do to
prepare? Align & match these activities with the learning objectives. Identify
the kinds of incentives or motivations that will engage students in the new
instructional material and prepare for the in-class activity.

Student Learning Activities at Home

Fill game table chart for the lesson
Prepare three questions for the teacher
Create and solve three problems of your own (bring to class to share)

Step 3: In-class activities that provide students opportunities to

deepen understanding

What kind of in-class activities will focus students to attain higher-level

cognitive abilities? Align & match these activities with the learning
objectives.

Classroom Activities
Materials preparation: base ten blocks or regular building blocks,
colored worksheets for Group B and C to use.
To engage the students by reviewing their table from last nights
game.
Address common problems (Anticipate problems with irregular shapes
& larger numbers)
Facilitate whole group discussion (Work on three problems on the
board together)
Differentiation/Individualization - determined by the success level with
the homework
Let the above levels teach the below levels- especially when split into
groups.
Leveled group activities: Group A will work with handheld blocks to
create shapes and measure the perimeter and area. Group B will have
a picture sheet to fill with base ten blocks before measuring the area.
Group C will have base ten blocks and smaller numbers to manipulate.
Guide by the side: I will monitor each group to determine if they need
assistance, but will wait until Group A asks, or Group B asks, but offer
help if I see Group C Struggling.

Step 6: Assessment

How will you evaluate students learning and progress? Evaluation and
assessment are ongoing throughout the process. Plan how you will evaluate
the effectiveness of the flipped experience and assess student understanding
at all stages.

Assessment
Formative/Summative - During the three problems on the board, each
student will have a dry erase sheet/board that they can work on.
When it is time to see where everyone is, they all hold them up in the
air so I can see, and I can quickly assess whos got it and whos
struggling. Also, provide an exit ticket for the last 5 minutes of class.
Challenging questions - Challenge the students who seem to have it
down to compute the area of iregular shapes. Maybe even calculate
the area of the classroom (provided that there are tiles on the ceiling).
Interactive quizzes- we can play quizmo in the first 3-5 minutes to get
the students excited about todays lesson.
