The 12V-116 adjustable up-light utilizes a
connector system which allows the cable

purpose of low voltage

Low voltage lighting systems have been designed for people who desire ultimate safety and who
want to do their own installation or have their electrical contractor install the syslem at a modest
cost. Because of the safety factor of low voltage, it is permissible to run the 12 volt cable on top of
the ground or buried. lt also permits the use of pin type connectors, which eliminates the need for
wire splicing. Because of the simple connection syslem, the flexibility of a low voltage system is
unlimited, allowing the fixtures to be easily relocated to adapt to the changing, growing landscape.

tips lor a better LV system

1. Place transformer at least 12" above ground level.
2. Always use at least 50% of the specified transformer capacity.

3. Do not exceed the rating of the translormer.

4. Replace lamp immediately when burn out occurs.
5. Carry 1 or 2 spare lamp bulbs at all times for replacement.
6. Bury cable at least 12" below ground to prevent accidental cutting by spading or cultivating.
7. Place transformer switch in "low" position for everyday use.
8. When placing lixtures on cable, always start at the end and leave the excess cable coiled next
to the transformer. Whenever possible, have at least 20'of cable belween the transformer and the
first lixtu re.
9. When using the 126 watt transformer, you should not exceed 100' of cable or more than 126
watts on any single run. When using in excess o1 100'of cable, place lransformer in the center of
the load. The 300 watt transformer uses two cables not io exceed 150' in length or 150 watts each.
See page 913 "placement of fixtures on 12V cable."

I transformer selection
Select the light fixtures ot your choice, add up the wattage of each fixture Jor lhe total load, and
then select a transformer that matches the closest to your waliage requirements. However, the
wattage must not exceed the rating of the transformer. The minimum wattage should be at least
halJ of the transformer rating. lf the total wattage exceeds 126 watts, either two Kim 126 watt trans-
formers can be used or one 300 watt transformer with two cables. The 300 watt transformer is
always used with two 100' cables.

The transformer must be mounted at least 12" above the ground and within 6'of 110/120 volt
receptacles. The transformers come complete with mounling brackets and can be mounted on
the side of the building or inside a garage. lf outlets are in the garden, a mounting board can be
made to give ample ground clearance. All lransformers are weatherproof and come with complete
instructions Ior mountin g.

placement of f ixtures on 12V cable

You should not exceed 126 watts on the 12V cable, or large voltage drops will occur. lt is permis-
sible to go 100' in each direction from the transformer, or a total of 200', however, the wattage
should not exceed the translormer rating. The wattage should be divided equally between the two
'100' lengths of cable. Whenever possible, there should be a minimum of 20' oI 12 volt cable
between the lirst fixture and the trans{ormer. This will give a better voltage balance to the system.
When using the 300 watt transformer, it is permissible to place up to 150 watts on each .l50'cable.

lamps and lamp lile

The characteristics ol a 12 volt system requires that any lamp that burns out within the system be
replaced immediately or it will result in premature burn out for the balance of the lamps. lt is
recommended that one or two spares of each type oJ lamp be kept on hand.
There are various types and wattages of lamps that can be used wilh the up lighls. When using
over 18 watts, it requires the removal of the lens, or the addition of a shield and lens holder. lf the
lamps used are over 25 watls, the lens should be omitted. (See pageg10.) lf larger wattages are
used, be certain that you are not overloading the system.
