Anna, Grade 1, Stone Spring Elementary School
April 12, 2017

Literacy Lesson Plan for Beginning Reader:

Based on the assessments conducted, Anna was found to be in the late emergent stage of literacy
development. She has a strong grasp of the alphabet, has several sight words and is able to spell with ending
sounds in addition to beginning sounds. However, she does not have a complete Concept of Word (COW) and
is lacking in phonological awareness as well as the correct formation of letters when writing.

Procedure: Explain how this part of lesson will be carried out
Student reads aloud a short nursery rhyme while teacher times her; teacher then reads the same book
aloud, modeling fluency (speed, rhythm, and flow); student then reads the poem aloud again, while
being timed a second time. Teacher will note if student's speed, rhythm, and flow improved.

last 7 minutes (after Fluency and before Comprehension)
Procedure: Explain how this part of lesson will be carried out
1. To introduce lesson, teacher asks student if she knows what rhymes are, then explains briefly if she
answers no, giving an example ("dog and frog rhyme because they both end with the -og sound").
Then, teacher explains that in this nursery rhyme, all of the rhymes end with the sound -own.
2. Teacher reads first four pages aloud to student, then asks student to identify the rhyming words
from the passage (crown, town). Teacher will give corrections if necessary. Teacher will emphasize that
these words both end in the same sound.
2. Teacher repeats this process with the next four pages, and student identifies rhyme (brown, town).
3. For the next part of the lesson, teacher shows student index cards, reading them aloud, and asks her
to think of a word that rhymes with each of these words.

3 minutes (after Fluency and before Writing)
Procedure: Explain how this part of lesson will be carried out
Teacher will ask student three questions: two that are literal (What kind of animals are in this story?
What were they fighting for?) and one that is inferential (Why did the people made them leave the
town?), and record these responses. Teacher will provide corrections to literal questions if not
answered correctly, so that student gains comprehension of the story for the next portion of the lesson
(writing).

10 minutes (after Comprehension and before Word Study)
Procedure: Explain how this part of lesson will be carried out
First, teacher explains to student the task for this activity: student will write what happened in the
story in her own words, telling what happened in the beginning, what happened in the middle, and
what happened at the end. Then, student completes writing activity. Teacher will provide help for
student in she is struggling, and at the end, teacher will provide oral feedback.
