A. Preparatory Activities

1. Motivation

Teacher acts out an activity one at a time. The pupils guess the
teachers action that ends in ing.

Actions to be performed by the teacher:

planting
washing clothes
typing
singing
exercising

B. Development of Lesson

1. Presentation

Teacher presents a huge picture showing the hobbies or


recreational activities of each member of a family.
Say: I have here a picture of a family. Observe the activities that each
member is doing.

How do you call these activities? (hobbies/recreational activities)

2. Elicitation

(Teacher writes on the board the pupils answers for the given
questions.)

What activity makes Mr. Cruz healthy? (Playing tennis makes Mr.
Cruz healthy.)
What is Mrs. Cruz hobby? (Reading magazine is Mrs. Cruz
hobby.)
What is Franz favorite hobby? (Franz favorite hobby is biking
around the village.)
What is Erlies past time? (Erlies past time is watching TV
programs.)
What does Lolo Genie enjoy doing? (Lolo genie enjoys listening to
the radio.)
What does Lola Amy love doing? (Lola Amy loves gardening.)

3. Analysis and Discussion

Study the underlined phrase in each sentence.

Give the first word for each underlined phrase.


(playing, reading, biking, listening, watching, gardening)

How do these words end? (They end with ing.)

These phrases are names of activities. Hence, these words with -ing are
nouns.

Identify the verb in each sentence. Where is each underlined phrase


placed in the sentence? (It generally comes before or after the verb).

4. Generalization

A gerund is a verb form ending in ing and used as a noun.

A gerund phrase consists of a gerund and other word/s that go/goes


with it.

A gerund or a gerund phrase may come before or after the verb in a


sentence.

Change the words in the parenthesis to gerunds.

2. Enrichment

a. Group Work/Oral Exercise

Pupils form groups of four. Name members A, B, C and D


respectively. The teacher gives the question What do you enjoy
doing during you free time? The members tell their hobbies one at
a time using gerunds or gerund phrases. After everyone in the
group has spoken, the teacher then calls out some pupils to answer
the questions.

b. Paired Work/Written Exercise

Working with a partner, fill in the blanks with appropriate gerunds or


gerund phrases to complete the sentences.

1) The seven-year-old Lucy enjoys ________ on weekends.

2) ________ is prohibited inside the school premise.
